Overview

Death of Jordan DeMay

Jordan John DeMay (June 7, 2004 – March 25, 2022), a 17-year-old high school student from Marquette, Michigan, was found dead in his bed at his father's home on the morning of March 25, 2022. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound about four hours before his body was discovered.

After their son's death, John and Jennifer learned that he had been a victim of sextortion. A group of men from Nigeria had posed a young woman on Instagram using the handle dani.robertss. As Dani, they convinced Jordan to send explicit photos of himself to them. [2] [3] After receiving the photos, they threatened to make them public if Jordan did not pay them. His parents decided to go public to help raise awareness and garner support for the extradition of those involved.

In May 2023, indictments were issued against Samuel and Samson Ogoshi, brothers from Lagos, Nigeria. [1] They were arrested by Nigerian police in January 2023. On July 20, 2023, a judge ordered that they be turned over to the United States and on August 3, 2023, the Solicitor-General of Nigeria signed the surrender order. [1] The men involved, Samuel Ogoshi (22), Samson Ogoshi (20), and Ezekiel Ejeham Robert (19), were extradited from Nigeria to face criminal charges in the United States for their role in DeMay's death. The Ogoshi brothers appeared before a federal judge at the Gerald R. Ford Federal Building in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Monday, August 14, 2023. [4] They pleaded not guilty and are currently awaiting trial. They were denied bond. [2]

Charges

All three men are charged with conspiracy to sexually exploit minors, which carries a mandatory sentence of 15 years in prison, conspiracy to distribute child pornography, which carries a minimum sentence of 5 years in prison, and conspiracy to commit stalking through the internet, which has no minimum sentence but a maximum sentence of 5 years. Samuel Ogoshi is additionally charged with Sexual Exploitation and Attempted Sexual Exploitation of a Minor Resulting in Death, which carried a mandatory sentence of 30 years in prison with the possibility of a life sentence. [5] [3] Federal prosecutors released a statement saying they did not intend to seek the death penalty. [6]

Sextortion employs non-physical forms of coercion to extort sexual favors from the victim. Sextortion refers to the broad category of sexual exploitation in which abuse of power is the means of coercion, as well as to the category of sexual exploitation in which threatened release of sexual images or information is the means of coercion.

Operation Delego was a major international child pornography investigation, launched in 2009, which dismantled an international pedophile ring that operated an invitation-only Internet site named Dreamboard which featured incentives for images of the violent sexual abuse of young children under twelve, including infants. Only 72 charges were filed against the approximately 600 members of Dreamboard due to the extensive encryption involved. Members were required to upload new material at least every 50 days to maintain their access and remain in good standing.

The Rochdale child sex abuse ring involved underage teenage girls in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. Nine men were convicted of sex trafficking and other offences including rape, trafficking girls for sex and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child in May 2012. This resulted in Greater Manchester Police launching Operation Doublet and other operations to investigate further claims of abuse. As of January 2024 a total of 42 men had been convicted resulting in jail sentences totalling 432 years. Forty-seven girls were identified as victims of child sexual exploitation during the initial police investigation. The men were British Pakistanis, which led to discussion on whether the failure to investigate them was linked to the authorities' fear of being accused of racial prejudice. The girls were mainly White British.

He used the internet extensively to target hundreds of underage girls under many pseudonyms, most notoriously Brian Kil and Purge of Maine. In 2017, he was arrested after falling for a social engineering and hacking scheme by the FBI and Facebook, and in 2021, he was convicted and sentenced to 75 years in prison.

On September 19, 2019, members of neo-Nazi accelerationist paramilitary group The Base vandalized Beth Israel Sinai Congregation in Racine, Wisconsin, and Temple Jacob in Hancock, Michigan in the US, in a campaign the group dubbed "Operation Kristallnacht". Three members of The Base were arrested and subsequently found guilty.
