Uracheri Gurukkanmar ( Also Known as Puthusseri Gurukkal 18th Century Pandits) were men who taught Herman Gundert Sanskrit and Malayalam. Records show that he lived in the 18th century [1] [2] The Five brothers were born to the Kaviyur, the Thiyya family in Chokli near Thalassery. [3] The Gurukulam LP School, founded in 1871, was founded by the Urachery Gurukkal. Their job was to herd the cows of the lords. [4] During this time, she learned to read and write outside the school. [4] The Guru, seeing the extraordinary intelligence of these children, taught them inside the school with the permission of the lords. [4] They quickly developed their knowledge and quickly became teachers of the country. [4] The following are the five Uracheri Gurunathanmar.

Gurus were fragrant poets. Hence, the area where they lived was later known as Kaviyoor. [4] Hermann Gundert heard about them and sought them out to learn Malayalam. Gundert had mastered the Malayalam language by inviting Urachery gurus to Illukkunnu where he lived. Urachery Gurunathan was also the inspiration for compiling the first dictionary in Malayalam. The only surviving monument to these gurus is the house where they lived in Kaviyoor. [4]

Malayalam is also spoken by linguistic minorities in the neighbouring states; with a significant number of speakers in the Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka, and Kanyakumari, Coimbatore and Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. It is also spoken by the Malayali Diaspora worldwide, especially in the Persian Gulf countries, due to the large populations of Malayali expatriates there. They are a significant population in each city in India including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad etc.
Kalaripayattu is an Indian martial art that originated in Kerala, a state on the southwestern coast of India during the 11th–12th century CE.
Sree Narayana Guru was a philosopher, spiritual leader and social reformer in India. He led a reform movement against the injustice in the caste-ridden society of Kerala in order to promote spiritual enlightenment and social equality. A quote of his that defined his movement was "one caste, one religion, and one god for all human beings." He is the author of the Advaita poem Daiva Dasakam, which is one of the most used poem in Kerala for community prayer.
Mahakavi Kumaran Asan was a poet of Malayalam literature, Indian social reformer and a philosopher.He is known to have initiated a revolution in Malayalam poetry during the first quarter of the 20th century, transforming it from the metaphysical to the lyrical and his poetry is characterised by its moral and spiritual content, poetic concentration and dramatic contextualisation. He is one of the triumvirate poets of Kerala and a disciple of Sree Narayana Guru. He was awarded the prefix "Mahakavi" in 1922 by the Madras university which means "great poet".
Thalassery, formerly Tellicherry, is a municipality and commercial city on the Malabar Coast in Kannur district in the state of Kerala, India, bordered by the districts of Mahe, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kasaragod and Kodagu (Karnataka). Thalassery municipality has a population of just under 100,000 as of 2011 census. Thalassery Heritage City has an area of 23.98 square kilometres (9.26 sq mi). Thalassery has an altitude ranging from 2.5 to 30 metres above mean sea-level.
Hermann Gundert was a German missionary, scholar, and linguist, as well as the maternal grandfather of German novelist and Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse. Gundert is chiefly known for his contributions as an Indologist, and compiled a Malayalam grammar book, Malayalabhaasha Vyakaranam (1859), in which he developed and constricted the grammar spoken by the Malayalis, nowadays; a Malayalam-English dictionary (1872), and contributed to work on Bible translations into Malayalam. He worked primarily at Tellicherry on the Malabar coast, in present day Kerala, India. Gundert also contributed to the fields of history, geography and astronomy.
Malabar District, also known as British Malabar or simply Malabar was an administrative district on the southwestern Malabar Coast of Bombay Presidency (1792–1800), Madras Presidency (1800–1937), Madras Province (1937–1950) and finally, Madras State (1950–1956) in India. It was the most populous and the third-largest district in the erstwhile Madras State. The historic town of Kozhikode was the administrative headquarters of this district.
Brennen College is an educational institution in Kerala, affiliated to the Kannur University. It is located in Dharmadam, Thalassery of Kerala state, India. The college evolved from a school established by the English philanthropist Edward Brennen, master attendant of the Thalassery Port, who had made Thalassery his home. The college was granted special heritage status by the University Grants Commission in 2016 with an aim of conserving college which is more than 125 years old. The college secured 97th position in NIRF all India ranking.
Vayaleri kunhikannan Gurukkal-(Vagbhatananda) was a Hindu religious leader and Reform movement in British India. He was the founder of the Atmavidya Sangham, which was fundamentally a group of professionals and intellectuals who sought change, and also the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-Operative Society.
Mannikoth Ramunni Nair (1903–1943), better known by his pseudonym, Sanjayan, was a Malayalam writer, journalist and one of the pioneers of satirical writing in Malayalam literature. Along with E. V. Krishna Pillai, another of the notable Malayalam satirists, Sanjayan is known to have developed the genre of light essays in the language. Besides satires, he also wrote literary criticisms and translated Othello into Malayalam language.
Kadathanadan Ambadi is a 1990 Indian Malayalam-language sword and sorcery film directed by Priyadarshan and written by Cochin Haneefa. It is a sequel to the 1964 film Thacholi Othenan and the 1970 film Othenente Makan. The film stars Mohanlal in the title role, along with Prem Nazir, Swapna, and Raadhu. A few shots from Thacholi Othenan were shown in this film. Kadathanadan Ambadi was released after the death of Prem Nazir.
Kaduvetti Guru, also known as J. Guru, was an Indian politician, who was twice elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Tamil Nadu. He was the president of a caste organisation, the Vanniyar Sangam.
Nettur is a village segment which comes under the jurisdiction of Thalassery municipality, in the state of Kerala, India. It is situated in North Thalassery en route to Kannur via NH 17. The Anjarakandi-Thalassery state Highway passes through Nettur. Nettur is picturesquely nestled between the Kuyyali and Anjarakandi rivers.
Maamaankam is a 1979 Indian Malayalam-language historical drama film directed and produced by Navodaya Appachan, made under Navodaya Studio. It is based on the medieval Mamankam festival held every 12 years at the banks of river Bharathappuzha in Tirunavaya, Southern India. Written by N. Govindankutty, the film stars Prem Nazir, Jayan, Jose Prakash and Alummoodan in the lead roles. The film has musical score by K. Raghavan.
Choorayi Kanaran (1812-1876) was the first Deputy Collector of India. He was born into a prominent family. He was also the first Municipal Chairman of Kerala.
Kottackkal Kanaran Gurukkal (1850–1941), was a Kalaripayattu gurukkal, who contributed to the revival or Kalarippayattu from after British ban of Kalaripayattu. His contributions to the preservation of Kalaripayattu has earned him the moniker, "Dronacharya of Kalaripayattu". Kanaran Gurukkal was born in a Chekavar Thiyyar Tharavad, a large Landlord family near Mukkali, Vadakara, Kozhikode. He was unmarried and lived a life fully devoted to the preservation of Kalaripayattu
Kakuzhi Kunhibapu Gurukkal (1826–1878) was born in Thiyya family of Kakuzhi in Thalassery, Kannur. Learned Sanskrit in childhood; He also excelled in music. He was educated in Sanskrit by Pudusherry Kannan Gurukkal at Menappuram near Thalassery. After establishing his own school and running it, he was appointed as a teacher in the District School (1855) and continued in the same position after the Basel Mission took over the school. He was a teacher for almost fifty years and had a large number of disciples. He helped Gathuweiravasaiip in the writing of the book Vyakarana Question and Answer. As a child, Idampratham organized a Kathakaliyogam for Thiyya Community the children and participated in it.
Scaria Zacharia was an Indian linguist, professor and researcher. He was a member of numerous significant research initiatives that received global notice and collaborated with many linguists and cultural experts from other nations. He played a key role in recovering the archival knowledge and Malayalam manuscript from the University of Tubingen in Germany. Later he published the digital versions of the architects. In 2022, Thunchath Ezuthachan Malayalam University and Mahatma Gandhi University honoured him with honorary D lit. Scaria Zacharia is the winner of Kerala Sahitya Akademi’s Lifetime Achievement award. He died on 18th October 2022 due to age related issues.
Gundert Museum is a heritage museum located at Thalassery, Kerala. It was originally the residence of Hermann Gundert, a German missionary who is remembered for his contributions to the Malayalam language. It was known as Gundert Bungalow before turning into a museum and was constructed in the 1800's. In 2022, it was converted into a museum by the Kerala Government as a tribute to Gundert. It was from this bungalow that Gundert published the first language dictionary in Malayalam and the first Malayalam daily Rajyasamacharam and Paschimdodayam. The museum houses the Hermann Hesse Library, a collection of rare books, the Julie Gundert Hall, the Gundert Statue and the Digital Book Archive.
