A center of learning as well as an important location for the island's economy, the number of 'Hafiz's and teachers from this district outnumber that of any other district in Fuvahmulah, and this district is considered by many to be the most educated and learning-centered district of Fuvahmulah.
Hussain Rasheed Ahmed is a Maldivian Sunni Islamic scholar and political leader in Republic of the Maldives. He is also the first elected President of Adhaalath Party, a political party in the Republic of Maldives known for its Sunni Islamic positions. He is fluent in Arabic, Urdu. During President Mohamed Nasheed's government, he was appointed as the co-chair of "Riyaasee Commission", then Minister of State for Home Affairs. On 23 December 2010, he was appointed as Minister of State for Islamic Affairs and held the position until the end of Nasheed's presidency.

He served as the Chief Judge of the Civil Court and as a member of the Judicial Service Commission of Maldives. He also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of the Maldives from 2003 to 2005. As a member of the Special Majlis Suood participated in drafting the current constitution of the Republic of Maldives.

The 2019 ACC Western Region T20 was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament held in Oman from 20 to 24 January 2019. The five participating teams were Bahrain, Kuwait, Maldives, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The matches were all played at the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium in Muscat. All participating nations made their T20I debuts during the tournament, following the decision of the ICC to grant full Twenty20 International status to all its members from 1 January 2019. Saudi Arabia defeated Qatar – who had been unbeaten in the round-robin stage – in the final by 7 wickets. Qatar's Tamoor Sajjad was named the player of the tournament.
Hehes is a 2022 Maldivian suspense thriller film directed by Ahmed Nimal. Produced by Ismail Shafeeq and Ali Shaniz Mohamed under Eupe Productions and Shy Production, the film stars Yoosuf Shafeeu, Ibrahim Jihad, Ali Azim, Shiyaza Mohamed, Washiya Mohamed, Irufana Ibrahim and Mariyam Shifa in pivotal roles. The film was released on 2 May 2022, on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr 1443.
