V. J. Thankappan

Vattavilakathu Johnson Thankappan is a communist politician from Kerala. [1]

He was born on 20 April 1934 at Aralummoodu to Johnson and Gnanamma. [2] He married Bella and has three sons and a daughter. [2] Before entering politics he had worked as a clerk in the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation. [3] He is known for playing a crucial role during the implementation of decentralisation project in Kerala. He died on 9 March 2019. [4]

Political life

Thankappan entered politics by his activism in the Communist Party of India from 1963. After the split in the party, he chose to remain with Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the Councillor of Neyyattinkara Municipality during the period 1968 to 1979. [5] [6] He became its Chairman of the Municipality in 1979 and remained in office till 1984. [1] [5] Thankappan was elected to the 7th Kerala Legislative Assembly from Nemom Assembly Constituency through a by-election held on 2 March 1983. He got re-elected from the same constituency in both 1987 and 1991. [1] In the Second E. K. Nayanar ministry, he became the Minister for Local Administration from 2 April 1987 to 17 June 1991. [7] He has also acted as the Vice- Chairman of Third Administrative Reforms Committee, and has headed the Committee on Decentralisation of Administration. [1] In 2006, he again got elected to Kerala Legislature from Neyyattinkara Assembly Constituency. [5] During this period where V S Achuthanandan Government was formed, he acted as the pro-tem Speaker of the house. [5]

Nemom is an area in the city of Thiruvananthapuram. It is surrounded by Thirumala in the north, Malayinkeezhu in the north-east, Balaramapuram in the south-east, Kovalam in the south and Thiruvallam in the west. Nemom falls within the municipal corporation of Thiruvananthapuram, though partly exclusive. It is connected with Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara, Vizhinjam, Poovar, Kattakkada, Nagarcoil, and Kanyakumari through the main arterial highway National Highway 66.

Panoor is a Municipality in the district of Kannur in the state of Kerala, India. The town is the main market place for the farmer communities in the surrounding regions. Panoor is one of the main suburbs of the City of Thalassery. Panoor got municipal status when the Government of Kerala decided to upgrade Panoor Grama Panchayat and added with other Panchayats, as Panoor Municipality in 2015.

Aruvanpalli Puthiyapurakkal Abdullakkutty (born 8 May 1967) is an Indian politician. He was elected as the National Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 26 September 2020. He has also served as the BJP Vice President of Kerala state. He is also a former member of Lok Sabha from Kannur and ex-MLA from Kannur constituency of Kerala state.

He was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the present ruling party in Kerala but resigned from the Kerala Legislature and the party on 9 March 2012 and joined Indian National Congress party. His resignation was attributed to rampant factionalism in his party. After joining the Indian National Congress, he contested the by-election from Neyyattinkara on "Hand" symbol and romped home with a margin of 6,334 votes, pushing up the ruling UDF's slender majority in the 140-member Kerala Assembly to 73. He again contested from the same constituency in 2016 and 2021. but he got defeated in both elections, i.e. for 9543 votes in 2016 and it increased to 14262 votes in 2021. He was defeated by K. Ansalan of CPI(M) in both elections.

He was born on 10 September 1931 to J. Nallathampy Nadar and Lekshmi in Chenkal Parassala. He married K. Baby Sarojam and they have two sons and one daughter. He died on 21 January 2007.

Kunjachan was a member of Rajya Sabha from 1973–79 and 1988-91.
