A member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district (constituency) to the legislature of State government in the Indian system of government. From each constituency,the people elect one representative who then becomes a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Each state has between seven and nine MLAs for every Member of Parliament (MP) that it has in the Lok Sabha,the lower house of India's bicameral parliament. There are also members in three unicameral legislatures in Union Territories:the Delhi Legislative Assembly,Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Puducherry Legislative Assembly. Only a Member of the Legislative Assembly can work as a minister for more than 6 months. If a non-Member of the Legislative Assembly becomes a Chief Minister or a minister,he must become an MLA within 6 months to continue in the job. Only a Member of the Legislative Assembly can become the Speaker of the Legislature.
The Puducherry Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Indian union territory (UT) of Puducherry,which comprises four districts:Puducherry,Karaikal,Mahéand Yanam. Out of eight union territories of India,only three have legislatures and they are Delhi,Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir. After delimitation shortly after its formation,the Puducherry legislative assembly has 33 seats,of which 5 are reserved for candidates from scheduled castes and 3 members are nominated by the Government of India. 30 out of 33 Members are elected directly by the people based on universal adult franchise and the remaining three are nominated by the central government. These nominated members enjoy the same powers as elected members of the assembly.

M. Vaithianathan is an Indian politician and a current member of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly from the Lawspet constituency. He had earlier won that constituency in an All India N.R. Congress ticket in the 2011 Puducherry Assembly election,polling 10189 votes,defeating V. P. Sivakolundhu of Congress with a margin of 5432 votes. During the 2016 assembly election however,he was denied a ticket from AINRC. He then contested independently but lost to V. P. Sivakolundhu placing himself second in the constituency on poll count. Just prior to the 2021 Puducherry assembly election Vaithianathan joined the Congress party and contested from Lawspet constituency again,this time defeating the Puducherry state BJP president,V. Saminathan by a margin of 5701 votes.

He won the 2016 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election from Kalapet constituency by a narrow margin of 500 votes over All India N.R Congress' candidate P.M.L. Kalyanasundram who had earlier defeated him in the 2011 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election in the same constituency. He has been a Revenue,transport,IT,minority affairs minister in the Government of Puducherry. He represented Lawspet constituency between 2001 and 2011 and Kalapet constituency from 2016 to 2021. He is also the son of M. O. H. Farook who was former Chief Minister of Pondicherry.

Krishnamurthy was a member of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly from the Reddiarpalayam constituency in Ozhukarai taluk,Puducherry district from 2001 to 2006. He was first elected MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party in Puducherry Legislative Assembly. Krishnamurthy died on 14 April 2024,aged 66.
