The VIP Protection Unit (Abbreviation: VIPPU; Chinese :要員保護組), otherwise known as G4 (originally Section G, Division 4) is a branch of the Hong Kong Police Force.

The Hong Kong Police Force is the largest disciplined service under the Security Bureau of Hong Kong. It is the world's second, and Asia's first, police agency to operate with a modern policing system. It was formed on 1 May 1844 by the British Hong Kong government with a strength of 32 officers. In 1969, Queen Elizabeth II granted the 'Royal' prefix and the HKPF became the Royal Hong Kong Police Force (RHKP), only to be removed in 1997 upon the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong to China.

Introduction

The original name had been given to the unit since it is the 4th division of the former Royal Hong Kong Police Force's Special Branch. [2]

Following the disbanding of the RHKP Special Branch in 1995, the VIP Unit was reassigned under the Security Wing of the Hong Kong Police Force after the handover in 1997.

Training

It has primary responsibility for the personal safety of HKSAR Chief Executive and his/her core family (it was Governor and his family before the Handover in 1997), high-rank government officials, VIPs and visiting dignitaries to Hong Kong, therefore the training techniques taught to all VIPPU officers include VIP protection and unarmed combat. [3]

In addition they also undergo training in firearms, crowd control, self-defense, tactical driving, physical and tactical training, Basic Trauma Life Support and English and Putonghua fluency. [4] They also practice simulation exercises with the PTU and the SDU. [4]

The standard issue sidearms for all VIPPU is the Glock 17 and the Glock 19 for females or officers with smaller hands while the short version of the Heckler & Koch MP5 is the standard SMG and could be deployed in multiple variants, such as the K 、K-PDW and Coffer.

Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun

The MP5 is a 9x19mm Parabellum submachine gun, developed in the 1960s by a team of engineers from the German small arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch GmbH (H&K) of Oberndorf am Neckar. There are over 100 variants of the MP5, including some semi-automatic versions.

Apart from firearms, ASP expandable batons or a Taser are carried for less-than-lethal options to the VIPPU officers. Flashbangs and smoke grenades are also used to provide cover for escorting the VIP when being attacked by intruders.

Known involvement

The VIP Protection Unit are involved in protecting Hong Kong from any kind of disturbances, including demonstrations in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Hong Kong. [5]

A firearms unit is an armed unit within each territorial police force in the United Kingdom. For the most part, the police forces of the United Kingdom are unarmed; however, all have firearms units to provide the police force with the capability to deal with terrorists and armed criminals. The State Protection Group (SPG) is part of the Specialist Operations division of the New South Wales Police Force, having been established in 1991 to deal with extraordinary policing responses. The Police Tactical Unit is a unit within the Hong Kong Police Force which provides an immediate manpower reserve for use in large-scale emergencies. Unit companies are attached to all land Regions and are available for internal security, crowd control, anti-crime operations, disaster response and riot control throughout Hong Kong. SWAT (Bangladesh)

SWAT is an elite tactical unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Bangladesh. They operate under the Detective Branch of DMP. Eventually, the newly formed DMP unit SWAT is going to be expanded outwards forming one or more battalions. The force would remain as a part of the police force.

Special Security and Protection Battalion

The Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBn) is a branch of the Bangladesh Police. The battalion is raised as a specialized police unit to provide protection to the President of Bangladesh, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and any person designated as VIP by the Government including visiting foreign dignitaries. It is also responsible for the security of VIPs’ offices and residences and venues of programs. Steve Hui Chun-Tak is the former Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Hong Kong Police Force. Hui became well known during the 2014 Occupy campaign, when he started to give daily televised updates from 30 September 2014 as Chief Superintendent of Police. Hui's polite and friendly style of presentation was well received by the public and was liked by many including the protestors. A Facebook page '四點鐘許sir' created by a netizen on 8 October 2014 received more than 50,000 followers within a week.
