Pune, formerly called Poona (1857–1978), is the second largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, after Mumbai. It is the ninth most populous city in the country with an estimated population of 3.13 million. Along with its Industrial Estate Pimpri Chinchwad and the three cantonment towns of Pune, Khadki and Dehu Road, Pune forms the urban core of the eponymous Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR). According to the 2011 census, the urban area has a combined population of 5.05 million while the population of the metropolitan region is estimated at 7.27 million.

Maharashtra is a state in the western peninsular region of India occupying a substantial portion of the Deccan plateau. It is the second-most populous state and third-largest state by area in India. Nagpur hosts the winter session of the state legislature. Pune is known as 'Oxford of the East' due to the presence of several well-known educational institutions.

Pune Airport(IATA: PNQ, ICAO: VAPO) is located approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast of Pune in the state of Maharashtra, India. The airport is a civil enclave operated by the Airports Authority of India at the eastern side of Lohegaon Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force. The airport serves both domestic and international flights, especially to West Asia. The increasing flights have made construction of a new terminal and runway expansion mandatory.

The Pune Municipal Corporation is the civic body that governs Pune, the second largest city of Maharashtra. It is in charge of the civic needs and infrastructure of the metropolis, which is spread over an area of 331.26 sq. km. and has 3.4 million residents. Established on 15 February 1950, the executive power of the PMC is vested in the Municipal Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The position is held by Saurabh Rao since April 2018. The general body of the PMC consists of 162 directly elected councilors, popularly known as "corporators", headed by a mayor. Mukta Tilak (BJP) was elected as the mayor and Navanth Kamble as the deputy mayor by the newly elected general body in March 2017. Tilak is the first member of the BJP to hold the position. Following Kamble's demise while in office, Siddharth Dhende of the RPI (A) was elected as the deputy mayor in June 2017. The land for Pune Municipal Corporation was donated by Bhausaheb Shirole who was second Mayor of Pune city and later became Aamdar.

Economy of Maharashtra

Maharashtra has the largest economy in India. It is third-most urbanised state with urban population of 45% of whole population. Each year, the Government of Maharashtra publishes the Economic Survey of Maharashtra to be tabled in the budget session of the State. Although highly industrialized, agriculture continues to be the main occupation in many regions the state. Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra and also the financial capital of India houses the headquarters of almost all major banks, financial institutions, insurance companies and mutual funds. India's largest stock exchange Bombay Stock Exchange, oldest in Asia, is located in the city. More than 41% of the S&P CNX 500 conglomerates have corporate offices in Maharashtra. After successes in the information technology in the neighbouring states, Maharashtra has set up software parks in Pune, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Nagpur and Nashik, Aurangabad and Latur. Maharashtra is the second largest exporter of software with annual exports over 80,000 crores and accounts for more than 30 per cent of the country's software exports, with over 1,200 software units based in the state. Maharashtra ranks first nationwide in coal-based thermal electricity as well as nuclear electricity generation with national market shares of over 13% and 17% respectively. Maharashtra is also introducing Jatropha cultivation and has started a project for the identification of suitable sites for Jatropha plantations. Ralegaon Siddhi is a village in Ahmednagar District that is considered a model of environmental conservation.

Pune Metro

Pune Metro is a metro rail based rapid transit system under construction to serve the city of Pune and its Industrial Estate Pimpri Chinchwad in the Indian state of Maharashtra. As of March 2018, the system comprises 3 lines with a total length of 54.58 km. The 16.59-km Line 1 will be elevated between the headquarters of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation in Pimpri to Range Hills, from where it will run underground. Line 2 will run from Vanaz to Ramwadi covering a distance of 14.66 km on an elevated viaduct. Lines 1 and 2 are expected to be operational in 2021. The 23.33-km elevated Line 3 will run from the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi via Balewadi to Shivajinagar. All three lines will align at the Civil Court interchange station.

Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) is the metropolitan region around Pune Central and it’s industrial estate Pimpri Chinchwad. According to the 2016 reorganization of the region, PMR comprises two Municipal Corporations, three Cantonment Boards, seven Municipal Councils and 13 census towns and 842 villages spread over an area of 7,256.46 km2. The population of the region as per 2011 census was 7,541,946.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is the civic body that governs Pimpri Chinchwad, the extended city of Pune, Maharashtra. It was established on 11 October 1982 to govern the newly industrialized towns of Pimpri, Chinchwad, Akurdi and Bhosari. It governs an area of 181 km2 with a population of 1.72 million. The executive power of the PCMC is vested in the Municipal Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The position is held by Shravan Hardikar since April 2017. The general body of the PCMC consists of 128 directly elected councilors, popularly known as "corporators", headed by a mayor. Rahul Jadhav (BJP) was elected as the mayor and Sachin Chinchwade (BJP) as the deputy mayor in August 2018. The PCMC headquarters are situated on the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway in the heart of the city.

The competition is contested by 10 teams and will run in a span of 7 months from September to March and it is organized by All India Football Federation (AIFF).

2014 Malin landslide

On 30 July 2014, a landslide occurred in the village of Malin in the Ambegaon taluka of the Pune district in Maharashtra, India. The landslide, which hit early in the morning while residents were asleep, was believed to have been caused by a burst of heavy rainfall, and killed at least 151 people. The landslide was first noticed by a bus driver who drove by the area and saw that the village had been overrun with mud and earth. In addition to those dead, more than 160 people, and possibly up to 200, were believed to have been buried in the landslide in 44 separate houses. Rains continued after the landslide making rescue efforts difficult.

New Pune Airport airport in India

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Airport is proposed to serve the city of Pune, India. The greenfield airport will be located near the villages of Ambodi, Sonori, Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur-Munjawadi, Khanwadi, Pargaon Memane, Rajewadi, Aamble, Tekwadi, Vanpuri, Udachiwadi, Singapur near Saswad and Jejuri in Purandar taluka of Pune District in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The Government of Maharashtra has declared that the first flight from this airport is expected to take off by 2019 and the airport will be named after Maratha King Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj who was born at Purandhar fort. The Airports Authority of India conducted surveys on various areas near Pune for a new airport for the city. Initially a site near Chakan was fixed for the airport. But due to opposition from local farmers and the mountainous terrain, the government decided to set the new airport in Purandar taluka as it was a flatter region compared to Chakan. The proposed airport in Purandar will be spread over 2,400 hectares. This airport will also boost trade from Pune and neighboring districts as it will have its own dedicated cargo terminal.

The 2018–19 Indian Super League season was the fifth season of the Indian Super League, one of the top Indian professional football leagues, since its establishment in 2013. The regular season began on 29 September 2018 and concluded on 17 March 2019. The league took a mid-season break for around one month from 17 December 2018 to early January 2019 due to India's participation in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
