Vanessa Raw (born 28 September 1984 in Hexham) is a British artist and former professional triathlete.
Raw had a successful 11-year career as a triathlete and achieved 8 top ten positions and 3 medals across 26 World Triathlon races. [1]
She now works full-time as an artist and lives in Ramsgate.
In an interview with Winsor & Newton , Raw claimed to have started painting at around age 6 or 7. [2] Raw did a foundation course at Newcastle College before enrolling at Loughborough University. During her time at the university, she became involved in triathlon racing in 2005. In 2009, she successfully completed her BA in fine art. [2] [3]
Raw had a successful 11-year career as a triathlete and achieved 8 top ten positions and 3 medals across 26 World Triathlon races. [1] [4] She then achieved four medals in long distance (ironman) events before retiring in 2016 after years of struggling with injury. Notably, she has won the British Elite Duathlon Championships, Windsor Triathlon, Ironman 70.3 Italy. She obtained a Bronze medal in the 2015 ETU Middle Distance Triathlon Championships and consistently represented Great Britain as a leading contender in World Cup and World Triathlon Series races. Raw describes herself as an expressionist/'expressive colourist', [2] [6] with a figurative element. She describes her landscapes as self-portraits, and has stated that she is not 'overly concerned with realism' and that she likes to work with the 'physicality of paint'. [2] She cites Lucian Freud, Jenny Saville, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Marlene Dumas as influences for portraiture, and J. M. W. Turner and Vincent van Gogh as influences for landscapes. [2]
Some of her works, known as 'psychological landscapes', have been described as an exploration of phantoms, encompassing elements such as dreams, individuals, and locations. Her work attempts to the interplay between the present, the hidden subconscious, and the spaces that lie in between. [7]
In 2021-22, she held a solo show in Margate, displaying ‘I Dreamed I Touched the Land You See’ , which involved abstract dreamscapes. [8]
In September 2022, Raw's artworks depicting the nude female body were displayed at an exhibition called “Behind Closed Doors” at Berlin Art Week. [9]
In 2023, Raw was one of the artists selected for the Artist-to-Artist initiative at the Frieze Art Fair. She was proposed by renowned artist Tracey Emin for a solo exhibition at the fair. Her paintings on display were both an exploration of issues surrounding the male vs the female gaze, sexual identity, and desire, as well as a personal journey of self-discovery. [10]
Raw's artwork has been displayed in multiple art galleries in London and Margate, including at the Fitzrovia Gallery, the Flowers Gallery, and the Woolff Gallery. [11] [12] [13]
An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.2 km) run completed in that order, a total of 140.6 miles (226.3 km). It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.
Michellie Yvonne Jones is an Australian triathlete. She has won two ITU Triathlon World Championships, an Olympic silver medal, and the 2006 Ironman World Championship. She won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics as a guide for Katie Kelly, when paratriathlon made its debut at the Paralympics.
Joanna Sue Zeiger is an American triathlete who is the 2008 Ironman 70.3 world champion. Zeiger represented the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics in triathlon. She's the author of The Champions Mindset - An Athlete's Guide to Mental Toughness.
Samantha Warriner is a retired triathlete who represented New Zealand in triathlons ranging from sprint distance up to the Ironman. She was born in Alton, Hampshire, England. She turned professional at the end of 2005 after competing internationally for 3 years while teaching full-time at Whangarei Girls High School.
Andrew Robert Potts is a triathlete from the United States. He competed in triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics and is the 2007 Ironman 70.3 World Champion. Prior to triathlon, Potts was a swimmer where he won the bronze medal in the men's 400m individual medley at the 1995 Summer Universiade and earned a spot on the USA Swimming national team where he would place fourth at the 1996 Olympic Trials in the 400 IM.
Melissa Hauschildt is an Australian professional triathlete and former middle-distance runner. She is a 3-time World Champion, winning Gold at the 2011 and 2013 Ironman 70.3 World Championship as well as the 2013 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships. She also won Silver at the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championships. In April 2018, Hauschildt set a new Ironman brand record of 8:31:05, at the Ironman North American Championships, breaking the previous record of 8:33:56 set by Chrissie Wellington in 2011.
Erika Csomor is a Hungarian triathlete and duathlete. In 1998 she ran the marathon race at the European Championships, ending up in 36th place with a total time of 2:48:37.
Leanda Cave is a retired British triathlete. Cave is the 2002 World Triathlon Champion and the 2012 Ironman Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 World Champion, the first woman in the history of the sport to win both titles in the same year. Cave competed internationally for Wales and Great Britain.
Christine Ann Wellington is an English former professional triathlete and four-time Ironman Triathlon World Champion. She held all three world and championship records relating to ironman-distance triathlon races: firstly, the overall world record, secondly, the Ironman World Championship course record, and thirdly, the official world record for all Ironman-branded triathlon races over the full Ironman distance.

She was named USA Triathlon's 2014 Non-Drafting Athlete of the Year.
Kathleen Margaret "Katie" Kelly is an Australian paratriathlete, who has a degenerative disease known as Usher syndrome. Kelly began competing in the PT5 paratriathlon classification in February 2015 when her condition deteriorated to a legally blind state. She has just 30 per cent of her vision. With her guide Michellie Jones, Kelly won gold medals at the 2015 and 2017 ITU World Championships and 2016 Rio Paralympics. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Lucy Charles-Barclay is an English professional triathlete specialising in the Ironman and 70.3 ("half-Ironman") distances. She is the 2023 World Ironman champion and the 2021 World Champion in the 70.3 discipline, both under the authority of the World Triathlon Corporation. In between, she won the World Triathlon Long Distance Championships in 2022. In 2023, she broke the course record for the iconic Kona Ironman course.

Taylor Knibb is an American triathlete and the 2022 and 2023 Women's Ironman 70.3 World Champion. She competed in the women's event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, held in Tokyo in 2021, finishing sixteenth. Later that same Olympics, she won a silver medal in the mixed relay event. Knibb is the youngest woman ever to qualify for the US Olympic triathlon team. Knibb qualified for two sports at the 2024 Summer Olympics, triathlon and the cycling time trial.
Katrina Matthews is an English professional triathlete who races in non-drafting, long-distance events. Major results include second places at the 2021 Ironman World Championship in Utah, USA, the 2024 Ironman World Championship in Nice, France, and the 2023 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Lahti, Finland. She was a member of the BMC Pro triathlon team 2020–2022 and is a physiotherapist working for the British Army.
