VarageSale is a virtual garage sale app that lets users buy and sell items in their communities. It currently has users across the United States and Canada, as well as in Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK. The company is based in Toronto and funded by investors including Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners. [1] [2] [3]

History

VarageSale was founded by Tami Zuckerman, an elementary school teacher living in Montreal, Quebec. While pregnant with her first child, she asked her husband Carl Mercier, a programmer, to improve on the experience of buying and selling items over social networks. [4] [5]

In May of 2012, VarageSale launched its first community, "West Island Community" In Montreal's West Island sector. The company has since moved its headquarters to Toronto, Ontario. [6] [7]

VarageSale was named 2014 Startup of the Year in the Canadian Startup Awards. [8] In March 2015, it was included as part of Canadian Business's list of Canada's Most Innovative Companies. [9]

On November 7, 2017 VarageSale announced it was acquired by VerticalScope, another Toronto-based company that focuses on building online communities. [10] [11]

Carwow is an online marketplace for buying and selling cars. It uses the reverse marketplace model to remove the need for customers to negotiate with dealers when buying or selling their cars. When buying a new car, users choose the car they want, along with the various specifications and features, and then receive offers directly from dealers. When selling a car, users upload some basic details about their car, after which different car dealers are invited to bid to buy the car directly from them. It also provides information to prospective purchasers and gives feedback on rogue dealers. The company has a YouTube page, run by motor journalist and Carwow's Chief Content Officer Mat Watson, where different cars are reviewed.
