Veronica Penny is a Canadian Spelling Bee Regional Champion who has competed in spelling bees on the Regional level, the Provincial Level, the National Level, and in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. In 2009, at age 10, Penny placed 25th, and in 2010, she placed 17th. In 2011, she reached the Finals, placing 6th in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. [1] Penny has a record of 10 Regional Spelling Bee titles. From 2008 to 2010, Veronica won 5 Hamilton Regional bees. [2] [3] [4] In 2011 and 2012, Veronica won 5 Regional Championships in Ottawa. [5] [6] Veronica became Ontario Provincial Champion in 2010, representing Hamilton, Ontario. She won the Provincial Championship the next year in 2011, representing Ottawa in the Spelling Bee of Canada. [7] Penny was the Spelling Bee of Canada Intermediate champion for 2013.[ citation needed ]

Penny was a media darling at the 2008 and 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bees for her unique style when spelling her words. [8] [9] During the live broadcasts of the spelling bee, Penny became known for covering her face to think just before spelling a word. [10] Images of Penny appeared on the Internet and were published in major newspapers [11] [12] from New York to the West Coast. In 2008, at 10 years old, Veronica reached the semifinals at the Scripps National Spelling Bee and placed 4th at Canspell, misspelling ophiomorphic. [13] In 2009, at age 11, she placed 17th in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. [14] Penny is known for putting a penny in her shoe for good luck and sleeping with a dictionary under her pillow. [15] In 2011, Veronica was runner up [16] in the Canwest Canspell spelling bee.

Veronica Penny was recognized at the Ontario Parliament during session by Member of Parliament Ontario Liberal Party Grant Crack. She has appeared in a spell-off on CTV Morning Live with hosts Lianne Laing, Kurt Stoodley, and Jeff Hopper. [17]

The Canwest Canspell National Spelling Bee, later called the Postmedia Canspell National Spelling Bee, was a spelling bee held annually in Canada from 2005 to 2012. The bee was affiliated with the United States-based Scripps National Spelling Bee and used similar rules and word lists, adapted to suit Canadian usage and spelling. It was organized by Canwest Global Communications, parent company of nine of the regional sponsors, from 2005 to 2010 and by the Postmedia Network from 2010 to 2012 after Canwest's bankruptcy. The spelling bee ended in 2012.

She is a former World Champion, and was lead for the championship team at the World Senior Curling Championship in 2009 and skip for the 2011 World Senior Curling Championships. Jurgenson grew up in Ontario, where she played with her sister, Marilyn Bodogh. She won her first provincial title in 1980. She skipped Ontario to a 7–5 record at the 1980 Canadian Ladies Curling Association Championship.

The South Asian Spelling Bee is an annual spelling bee platform in the United States for children of South Asian descent. It is an annual contest that tours the country each June and July in pursuit of the top two spellers from formerly as many as 12, but currently 5 cities nationwide. Since 2018, it also features a program similar to the Scripps National Spelling Bee's RSVBee, in which wild-card spellers can apply to compete at nationals. The competition is open to any student at or below the age of 14, who has at least one parent or grandparent who is of South Asian descent, or whose lineage can be traced to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and/or Sri Lanka. Tina Takahashi is a Canadian judoka, coach and author. She won Canada's first gold medal at the World University Games in Judo in 1984 and coached Canada's first women's Judo Olympian Sandra Greaves in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Takahashi was the first Canadian woman to achieve the rank of roku-dan, and the first women's Sport Canada carded athlete.
