Vertigo is the student magazine of the University of Technology, Sydney. [1] Its name derives from the university's main building, which is a 28-storey brutal modernist tower block, and how the Vertigo Offices were originally at its summit. Vertigo is published by the UTS Students' Association (UTSSA). [2] [3]

History

The name Vertigo was adopted in 1991. Previously the student newspaper had been called Newswit, a leftover from when UTS was the NSW Institute of Technology. It also incorporated the Voice of Kuring-Gai. [4] Newswit was first published on 1 March 1973, with Ross Gittins as editor. [5] An exhibition was held in 2023 to celebrate 50 years of publication. [6]

Content

Each year, the team elected as editors of Vertigo are given creative control of the publication. [7] UTSSA by-laws require at least 50% all content published in Vertigo to be non-fiction, half of which must relate to issues affecting students of UTS. These quotas are enforced by the General Secretary of the UTSSA. [8]

Magazine

Since 2016 the magazine has been published as six volumes across the calendar year. The magazine is distributed across the Broadway and Haymarket campuses.

Each edition contains an editorial letter and submissions from students and the editorial team. The layout and written content of Vertigo is dictated by the incumbent editorial team. The magazine typically divided into the categories of arts & lifestyle, business, science & innovation, society and culture, creative writing, and a visual showcase. Written submissions are featured alongside artwork, visual design and comics.

VertigoTV

The 2017 Editors of Vertigo started VertigoTV, a digital video brand managed by one editor and a team of screenwriters, video editors, sound designers, animator, and filmmakers. They produced fashion lookbooks, animated trailers, interviews, campus news, and skits.

Office Bearer Reports

Vertigo is constitutionally required to print Office Bearer Reports for the UTS Students' Association Office Bearers if they would like to inform the student population about their role and activities. [9] This has often led to controversies as the editorial direction often attracts a readership which may be at political odds with some Office Bearers' beliefs. [10]

Editors

The Vertigo editorial team are annually elected at the end of the preceding year on a ticket of six to 12 by UTS students. Vertigo editorial teams have typically consist of an editorial and design contingent. An editor-in-chief may be elected at the discretion of the editorial team, but is not a fixed role. At the conclusion of their term, the Vertigo editorial team are paid a stipend of $40,000 divided by the number of members who have completed their term, granted no editor receives more than $5,000. [11]

<i>Technique</i> (newspaper) Student newspaper of the Georgia Institute of Technology

The Technique, also known as the "'Nique", is the official student newspaper of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, and has referred to itself as "the South's liveliest college newspaper" since 1945. As of the fall semester of 2011, the Technique has a weekly circulation of 10,000, distributed to numerous locations on the Georgia Tech campus and a handful of locations in the surrounding area. The first issue of the Technique was published on November 17, 1911, and the paper has printed continuously since its founding. The paper publishes weekly throughout the regular school year and primarily covers news, events and issues specific to the Georgia Tech community. In 2004 it was one of 25 collegiate newspapers to receive the Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press.

On Dit is a student newspaper published fortnightly during semester time, funded by the Adelaide University Union and advertising. Founded in 1932, it is the third oldest student newspaper in Australia along with Semper Floreat, which was first published in the same year. The paper replaced the Varsity Ragge which ran from 1928 to 1931, ending because of what On Dit described in its first edition as 'student apathy'. The Varsity Ragge returned in 1934 for a single edition as a rival to On Dit.

The University of Technology, Sydney, Students' Association is the representative body for students at the University of Technology, Sydney. It is based on level 3 of building 1 at UTS. It publishes the student magazine Vertigo. The association has departments which have previously worked collaboratively with the university to achieve practical outcomes for students, as well as ensuring that the university is held to account over its handling of student issues. Historically, this has resulted in numerous successful campaigns which have won rights for students in the university.

The YouX Students’ Representatives Council, formerly Adelaide University Union is the student representative body at University of Adelaide succeeding Students' Association of the University of Adelaide (SAUA) after the Adelaide University Union restructure in 2007. Pelican is the University of Western Australia's student magazine. It is financed by the UWA Guild with approximately 1,000 copies of each issue published and distributed around the university campus. It is Australia's second oldest student paper, having begun publication in 1929.

Campus Experience is the student organisation at Macquarie University and is a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University. The organisation manages Macquarie University's non-academic services of food and retail, entertainment, sport and recreation, student groups, child care and student publications. <i>The Georgetown Voice</i>

The Georgetown Voice is a student-run biweekly campus news magazine at Georgetown University. Founded as a print magazine in March 1969, the Voice publishes new editions every other Friday during the academic year. The magazine publishes online daily throughout the year, featuring news on campus and in the District of Columbia, as well as commentary, reviews, long-form journalism, and sports and entertainment coverage. Online, the Voice also produces podcasts and maintains a variety sports and culture blog. It is entirely operated, written, edited, and designed by student volunteers.

Concrete is the University of East Anglia's student newspaper. Concrete is free and published fortnightly on a Tuesday, during term time.
