Expo 2015 was a universal exposition hosted by Milan, Italy. It opened on May 1 at 10:00 CEST and closed on October 31. Milan hosted an exposition for the second time; the first was the 1906 Milan International.

Sala was also a candidate for the Democratic Party to become Mayor of Milan in the 2016 municipal election, which he won, becoming mayor on 21 June 2016. Sala is often nicknamed "Mr. Expo", for his position as CEO of the Universal Exposition.
