Vevean Oviette (1902-1986) was an Austrian artist known for her printmaking.
Oviette was born on 31 March 1902 in Graz, Austria. [1] In 1936 she moved to New York City where she studied at the Art Students League of New York and the Franklin School of Fine and Applied Arts, the New School for Social Research, and Atelier 17. She worked as a newspaper illustrator and a fashion illustrator. [2]
In 1948 Oviette exhibited her work at the Argent Gallery. In 1949, 1950, 1952, and 1955 she participated in the Brooklyn Museum annual. She had solo show in 1954 at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery. [2]
In the 1950s Oviette returned to Europe, first to Paris and then to Graz where she was part of the Secession Graz art movement. [1]
Her work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Art [3] and the Brooklyn Museum. [4]
Oviette died at her home in Graz, Austria in November 1986. [1] In 2007 the Neue Galerie Graz held a retrospective exhibition of her work. [5] Her works , which she kept at her home ( Billrothgasse, Graz Leonhard), including 2 Fernand Leger originals and her last will were stolen from her studio apartment before she was found dead the following morning.[ citation needed ]

Alice Trumbull Mason (1904–1971) was an American abstract painter. She was descended from renowned history painter John Trumbull through her father. She travelled throughout Europe when she was young. Beginning in 1921, she studied art in Rome, attending the British Academy in 1923. She settled in New York by 1927 and was influenced by early abstract artist Arshile Gorky. She also studied with Charles Webster Hawthorne at the National Academy of Design in New York where she befriended artists Esphyr Slobodkina and Ilya Bolotowsky. While her earlier works were biomorphic or pure abstraction, her knowledge of Byzantine architecture later infused her compositions with an architectural dimension. She continued her studies at the Grand Central Art Galleries until 1931. She later wrote that she became devoted to abstraction in 1929, "[A]fter happily painting these realistic things, I said to myself, 'What do I really know?' I knew the shape of my canvas and the use of my colors and I was completely joyful not to be governed by representing things anymore."
Helen Verhoeven is a painter and sculptor based in Berlin. Verhoeven was born in the Netherlands and moved to the U.S. in 1986. She attended the San Francisco Art Institute, New York Academy of Art, and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 2008 she won the Dutch Royal Award for Modern Painting, in 2010 the Wolvecamp Painting Award, and in 2019 she was the recipient of the ABN-AMRO Art Prize. She was commissioned to make a painting for the new courthouse of Dutch Supreme Court in The Hague that opened in 2015. Verhoeven's works seem to explore the theme of ceremonial gatherings. She makes monumental-sized paintings that are populated with contorted figures in various states of rapture, despair, lust and estrangement. Helen is the daughter of acclaimed film director Paul Verhoeven.
Ruth Leaf was an American artist and a pioneer in the discipline of printmaking, specifically etching. She studied at the New School for Social Research, Art Students League of New York and Brooklyn College, and Atelier 17. While fluent in the methods of woodcut, linoleum, monotype, collagraph and collage, she is most known for her viscosity etchings. Born in New York City, she spent many years teaching in Long Island before moving to Venice, California where she lived until her death in 2015.
