Video banking

Video banking refers to banking transactions or professional banking consultations performed via a remote video connection. Video banking can be performed via purpose built banking transaction machines (similar to an automated teller machine), or via a videoconference enabled bank branch.

Types of video banking

In-branch

Video banking can be conducted in a traditional banking branch. [1] This form of video banking replaces traditional banking tellers to a location outside of the main banking branch area, via the use of video and audio links. Customer use a purpose built machine in the branch to process viable medias such as cheques, cash, or coins.

Video banking can enable banks to expand the availability of banking consultations to branches that may not otherwise have staff with certain types of expertise. [2]

Non-branch vestibules

Video banking can be provided during non-traditional branch banking hours, up to 24 hours a day, [3] or in non-traditional banking locations such as grocery stores, office buildings, factories, or educational campuses. [4] The Indian bank IndusInd Bank, for example, launched a service called Video Branch which allows customers to conduct virtual face-to-face banking with bank branch managers or a central video branch from any location. A direct bank is a bank that offers its services only via the Internet, mobile app, email, and other electronic means, often including telephone, online chat, and mobile check deposit. A direct bank has no branch network. It may offer access to an independent banking agent network and may also provide access via ATMs, and bank by mail. Direct banks eliminate the costs of maintaining a branch network while offering convenience to customers who prefer digital technology. Direct banks provide some but not all of the services offered by physical banks.

A banking agent is a retail or postal outlet contracted by a financial institution or a mobile network operator to process clients’ transactions. Rather than a branch teller, it is the owner or an employee of the retail outlet who conducts the transaction and lets clients deposit, withdraw, transfer funds, pay their bills, inquire about an account balance, or receive government benefits or a direct deposit from their employer. Wizzit is a provider of basic banking services for the unbanked and underbanked in South Africa. Its services are based on the use of mobile phones for accessing bank accounts and conducting transactions, in addition to a Maestro debit card that is issued to all customers upon registration. Wizzit is a branchless banking business, meaning that its services are designed so that customers can generally conduct transactions without the need to visit bank branches.

The banking sector in Sri Lanka is monitored by the Bank Supervision Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka under the Banking Act, Monetary Law Act and the Exchange Control Act.

Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) is an Indian payments bank, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Noida. In the same year, it received the license to run a payments bank from the Reserve Bank of India and was launched in November 2017. In 2021, the bank received a scheduled bank status from the RBI.
