The Vidette Times is a local newspaper in Porter County, Indiana. [1] It began in 1842 as an occasional, the Republican. In 1866 it came under new ownership as The Porter County Vidette. In 1871, a rival, The Valparaiso Democratic Messenger emerged. In the 1920s, The Vidette and The Messenger merged to form The Vidette-Messenger. In 1994, Howard Publications purchased The Vidette-Messenger, renamed it The Vidette Times in 1995, and attempted unsuccessfully to give it more regional content, but eventually returned it to a local focus.

The Porter County Memorial Hall, also known as Memorial Opera House, is an historic Grand Army of the Republic memorial hall located in Valparaiso, Indiana. It was the meeting place of Chaplain Brown GAR Post No. 106, one of 592 GAR posts in Indiana. Designed in 1892 by a local architect, Charles F. Lembke., using Romanesque styling, it was built in 1892–3 to seat 100 people. It was also used as the local opera house.
Dall C. Fields was an American bassoonist, composer, and music educator who for much of his career was based in and around Chicago. As a performer, he had been a bassoonist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, and later, the Bachman Woodwind Ensemble. As an educator, he taught mostly in the Chicago area, teaching out of his own studio and through affiliations with the Maywood extension of the Chicago Conservatory of Music. He also taught at Yale University and through affiliations with August Bucci (1897–1935), William Johnson of Valparaiso, Indiana, and the Valpo Music House.
City West was a village in Porter County, Indiana, US, located on the shore of Lake Michigan approximately 10 miles west of Michigan City, Indiana. It was situated near the mouth of Fort Creek, now known as Dunes Creek, which empties into Lake Michigan near the Indiana Dunes State Park swimming beach. It was located near the former site of Petit Fort.
Tassinong is an unincorporated rural community in Porter County, Indiana, south of the city of Valparaiso. The community includes an historic marker claiming it to be a French mission and trading post in 1673, which would make it the oldest European settlement in Indiana as well as in neighboring Illinois.
Charles F. Lembke was an American architect and contractor who was prominent in Valparaiso, Indiana. Lembke built many downtown Valparaiso-area buildings, such as the Memorial Opera House, Carnegie public Library, Hotel Lembke, and several local schools.
The Laughery Valley Conference was an IHSAA-sanctioned conference that existed between 1941 and 1958. The conference had its footprint in the Southeast Indiana counties of Dearborn, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland. The conference was stable for its first 11 years, but lost three schools to the Ohio River Valley Conference within two years. The LVC folded in 1958, as two of the five members at the time consolidated, and the two Ripley County schools left joined their counterparts in the Tri-County Conference. Patriot, unable to obtain membership in the ORVC or TCC, played as an independent until it consolidated into Switzerland County in 1968.
Valparaiso Technical Institute (1874–1991), previously located in Valparaiso, Indiana, was originally established by G.A. Dodge as a department of Northern Indiana Normal School. After its reorganization in 1891 the school became the largest telegraph and railway instruction institution in the United States, and was known as "The Dodge Institute of Telegraphy."

The Lake-Porter County Conference was an IHSAA-sanctioned conference in Northwest Indiana. The conference formed by 1929 at latest, consisting of smaller schools in Lake and Porter counties. The much smaller rural Porter County schools split off in 1933, though Portage and Wheeler would compete in both the LPCC and Porter County Conference. The conference ended in 1949, as almost every school would form the Calumet Athletic Conference.
Urschel Laboratories Inc. is a global retailer of food-processing machinery, based in Chesterton, Indiana. The company was founded by William Urschel in 1910, after he invented a gooseberry snipper. The company's headquarters were located on South Napoleon Street in Valparaiso, Indiana, from 1910 until 1957, when a new plant was constructed on Calumet Avenue, also in Valparaiso. The company moved to a new facility in nearby Chesterton in 2015.
The Kankakee Valley Conference, occasionally known as the Kankakee Valley Athletic Association, was an IHSAA-sanctioned conference in northwestern Indiana that lasted from 1933 until 1967. The conference formed as a merger of the Jasper and Newton county conferences, along with schools from the newly formed Porter County Conference wanting another league to compete in. The league would also add schools from Starke and White counties soon after forming. Other than adding LaCrosse from LaPorte County for a short time, the league did not stray from this footprint. The league was always closely tied with the Midwest Athletic Conference, with some schools playing in both conferences in the MAC's first incarnation, and many KVC schools either helped form the MAC's lineup in its reformation, or ended up moving to the league after the collapse of the KVC.

Tremont was a flag stop on the South Shore Line located at Tremont Road in Porter County, Indiana. The station was built by the Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend Railway and opened circa 1908, serving its namesake town and later the Indiana Dunes.
