Viewforth High School is a secondary school in East Kirkcaldy, Scotland. [1] It opened in 1908 on Loughborough Road, but later moved to Windmill Road.
Viewforth opened on 21 September 1908 with 176 boys and 194 girls enrolled in the school. The first head teacher was Gregor McGregor.
The first female teachers began working at Viewforth during the First World War because of the shortage of male teachers. An extension was built in 1925 and the school name was changed to Viewforth Higher Grade School. This extension was destroyed by fire in January 1938.
Viewforth built a second extension in 1955 which included a new assembly hall, classrooms and a gym. A further extension was built in the 1980s. The school name was changed again in 1980 to Viewforth High School. [3]
In 2005, plans were drawn up for a new school building due to the obsolescence of the existing school buildings and the need to consolidate council properties. Plans were also made to build a replacement school for the rising population of South East Kirkcaldy. [4] Forming part of Windmill Community Campus the school, which remains Viewforth High School, began construction in 2015 and brought together Viewforth High School, Rosslyn School, a local library and local office creating Fife's first community campus. [5] It opened in 2016. [6]
The original school building was made a C listed building in 1998. [7] The architect was David Forbes Smith and it was a Wrenaissance building with separate entrances for boys and girls. [7] The site incorporated Eastbank House, used as a school annex and originally built in 1870. [8] [9] [10]
In 2018 both the 1908 school building and the Annex were identified as Buildings at Risk. [11] [12]
There was a fire on the site in 2017, for which two teenagers were charged. [10] [13] There was another fire in 2020, for which another teenager was charged. [14] [15] There had also been an earlier fire in 1977. [8]
In 2021 a planning application for housing on the site was approved. [16] The developers said that they will use stone from the original buildings in the boundary wall. [16]

Glenrothes is a town situated in the heart of Fife, in east-central Scotland. It is about 30 miles (48 km) north of Edinburgh and 30 miles (48 km) south of Dundee. The town had a population of 39,277 in the 2011 census, making it the third largest settlement in Fife and the 18th most populous settlement in Scotland. The name Glenrothes comes from its historical link with the Earl of Rothes, who owned much of the land on which the new town has been built; "Glen" was added to the name to avoid confusion with Rothes in Moray and in recognition that the town lies in a river valley. The motto of Glenrothes is Ex terra vis, meaning "From the earth strength", which dates back to the founding of the town.

The Mercat Shopping Centre is located in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom. The Mercat has one anchor store; TK Maxx. The Mercat – including surrounding areas – accounts for at least 30% of all the floorspace in Kirkcaldy town centre, which in total is 46,000-square-metre (500,000 sq ft) and providing as much as 200 shops, making Kirkcaldy the largest shopping area in Fife. The shopping centre was built in two phases between 1972 and 1981–83 with a refurbishment completed in 1997. A proposal to extend the shopping centre for a third phase is pending. In 1996 plans to broadcast an episode of Family Fortunes live from the Mercat Centre were scrapped due to concerns that the event would not be covered by the Centre's insurance company. Les Dennis described the decision as "unfortunate, but sadly unavoidable".

Victoria Hospital is a large hospital situated to the north of the town centre in Kirkcaldy, in Fife, Scotland. As one of two main hospitals in Fife, this serves both the town and surrounding Mid-Fife area. It is managed by NHS Fife.
Auchmuty School is a state secondary school in the town of Glenrothes in the Fife council area of Scotland. Opened in 1957, it was the first school for secondary education in the area. It quickly outgrew the original building and additions were added in about 1970. The planning and construction of a completely new Auchmuty High School, beside the old one, began in 2011, with doors opening to pupils in 2013.

Lesley Margaret Laird is a Scottish Labour politician who served as the Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party from 2017 to 2019. She was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kirkcaldy & Cowdenbeath and Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland from 2017 to 2019.
David Forbes Smith (1865–1923) was a Scottish architect of many of the Edwardian Baroque civic and co-operative buildings in Fife during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Born in Kirkcaldy in 1865 he apprenticed as a carpenter before being articled to John Murray of Kirkcaldy as an architect from 1885 to 1888. He obtained a place in the newly formed partnership of Honeyman & Keppie in Glasgow, overlapping and being photographed in staff pictures with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and was briefly in the office of Charles Davidson of Paisley before moving to Salisbury as chief assistant to the architect Fred Bath whose office he passed the qualifying exam in 1893. He was admitted as an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects on 12 March 1894. In 1898 he returned to his home town, spending the remainder of his career running his own practice until his death on 28 October 1923.
