The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is the primary counter-terrorist task force of India. The agency is empowered to deal with the investigation of terror related crimes across states without special permission from the states under written proclamation from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Anil Vasantrao Deshmukh is an Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra. He is a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party. At the time of the alleged attack,Strauss-Kahn was the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and considered to be a leading candidate in the 2012 French presidential election. Four days after his arrest,he voluntarily resigned his post at the IMF.

The Unnao rape case refers to the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl on 4 June 2017 in Unnao,Uttar Pradesh,India. On 16 December 2019,former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for the rape on 20 December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Further,Sengar was found guilty in the death of the girl's father in judicial custody.
