Vikerlased (The Vikings) is an Estonian opera in three acts by Evald Aav, [1] his only opera. It is considered to be the first Estonian opera. [2] The libretto is by Voldemar Loo, [1] brother of the composer's first wife, Ida Loo-Talvari. The libretto depicts events related to Pillage of Sigtuna in 1187. [2]

The premiere was on 8 September 1928 at the Estonia Theatre in Tallinn, [1] conducted by Raimund Kull.

The opera lasts 2 approximately hours and 15 minutes. [1]

Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre

The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre began as a mixed choir of the Estonia Society Musical Department (EMD) on the eve of World War I. The assembly of the Estonia Society created the Tallinn Higher Music School on November 17, 1918. The opening ceremony took place on September 28, 1919. In 1923 the educational institution was renamed the Tallinn Conservatoire. In 1938 the State Drama School was opened. In 1993 the school was renamed the “Estonian Academy of Music”. In 1995 the Drama Faculty was renamed the Higher Theatre School.

Evald Aav Estonian composer and choirmaster

Evald Aav was an Estonian composer born in Tallinn, Governorate of Estonia, Russian Empire. He studied music composition there with Artur Kapp and wrote primarily vocal music to words in the Estonian language. In 1928 he composed the first national Estonian opera, Vikerlased. The opera premiered in Tallinn on 8 September 1928. He modelled his style of composition after Tchaikovsky.
