The event is organized Tarptautinis Maratonas, a public institution that organizes other endurance sports events including the Vilnius Marathon, Trakai Triathlon and Vilnius Christmas Run.

History

The first women's run in Vilnius Vingis Park took place in 2013 June 16.

The main goals of the very first Women Run were to remind them of the importance of self-screening and prevention of breast cancer in every woman's life and to promote a healthy lifestyle.

In 2013 participants were able to compete in distances of 7 and 3.5 kilometers. 650 runners crossed the finish line. The winners of the first run were Lina Batulevičiūtė and Bronė Lenkevičiūtė. [1] In 2014 the distances changed a bit - the participants chose between 6 and 3 kilometers courses. The winners this time were Rasa Drazdauskaitė and Austėja Miežytė. [2]

In 2017 the two women's runs merged (AVON and Nike She Runs, hosted by Nike since 2013) into one. In this renewed run, the participants had to overcome a different (5k) length of track starting from Vilnius White Bridge. [3] In 2020 the traditional run was scheduled to run on June 13, but it had to be moved to August 8. This decision was made due to the difficult situation in the country caused by COVID-19. As with almost all other similar sporting events, the number of people taking part has fallen this year - from 501 in the main 5 kilometer distance - almost twice as low as in 2019. In 2021 The women's run will be held for the 9th time.

Established in 1929, it represented democratic and social-democratic ideas, as women Catholics had their own umbrella organization, established in 1922. LMT became a member of the International Council of Women and represented Lithuania in various international congresses. The council was financed by the government and included many wives of politicians of the authoritarian regime of President Antanas Smetona. As such, it did not actively protest government policies even if they were detrimental to women. The most significant political victory of LMT was prohibition of prostitution in 1935. The First Congress of Lithuanian Women took place on 6–7 October [O.S. 23–24 September] 1907 in Kaunas. It was organized by Catholic priests in preparation for the October 1907 election to the third State Duma but discussed only cultural and economic issues. The organizers attempted to invite representatives of different social classes and political affiliations leading to disagreements between socialists and Catholic clergy, and between educated intellectuals and less educated villagers. The congress resolved to establish the Lithuanian Women's Union. However, disagreements between the liberals and the Catholics led to splintering of the women's movement and to the establishment of the Association of Lithuanian Catholic Women in January 1908. The Women's Union was officially established only in 1922.

Therefore, it was in opposition to the government-sponsored Lithuanian Women's Council. The union was officially closed on 10 June 1935.
