The Virginia Biotechnology Association (VABIO) is the statewide trade group that promotes the scientific and economic impact of the biotechnology industry in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Headquartered at the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park in Richmond, Virginia, VABIO was founded in 1992, and incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a non-profit 501(c)(6) trade association. It is the official state affiliate of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).

VABIO sponsors student internships, workforce development initiatives and serves as the primary contact point for the media, government officials, researchers and students regarding the bioscience industry in Virginia. Its activities are governed by a board of directors composed of twenty-four leaders representing all segments of the bioscience community. The first full-time executive director for VABIO, Mark A. Herzog, was hired in August 2000. The current CEO is John L. Newby II. [1]

The Virginia Biotechnology Association is one of the three founding partners of Mid-Atlantic Bio, the first regional bioscience convention that combines academia, the commercial bioscience industry, and the venture capital community in one major event.

VABIO also produces the Virginia Bioscience Blog and the Virginia Bioscience Podcast.

Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. is an American biotechnology company founded in 2004 that develops and manufactures systems for gene sequencing and some novel real time biological observation. PacBio describes its platform as single molecule real time sequencing (SMRT), based on the properties of zero-mode waveguides. The company's first commercial product, the PacBio RS, was sold to a limited set of customers in 2010 and was commercially released in early 2011. A subsequent version of the sequencer called the PacBio RS II was released in April 2013. On September 25, 2013 a partnership between Pacific Biosciences and Roche Diagnostics was announced for the development of in vitro diagnostic products using the technology, with Roche providing US$75,000,000 in the deal. In 2015, the company launched a new sequencing instrument called the Sequel System with approximately 7-fold greater capacity than the PacBio RS II. Then in April 2019 the company launched the Sequel II system with a further 8-fold increase in throughput.

It houses nearly 70 public and private life sciences companies, research institutes affiliated with VCU, and prominent state and national medical laboratories. Henri Termeer American businessman

Henri A. Termeer was a Dutch biotechnology executive and entrepreneur who is considered a pioneer in corporate strategy in the biotechnology industry for his tenure as CEO at Genzyme. Termeer created a business model adopted by many others in the biotech industry by garnering steep prices— mainly from insurers and government payers— for therapies for rare genetic disorders known as orphan diseases that mainly affect children. Genzyme uses biological processes to manufacture drugs that are not easily copied by generic-drug makers. The drugs are also protected by orphan drug acts in various countries which provides extensive protection from competition and ensures coverage by publicly funded insurers. Biotechnology Innovation Organization organization in the United States

The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is the largest trade organization in the world that represents the biotechnology industry. It was founded in 1993 as the Biotechnology Industry Organization, and changed its name to the Biotechnology Innovation Organization on January 4, 2016. Biotechnology Innovation Organization serves more than 1,100 biotechnology firms, research schools, state biotechnology centers and related associations in the United States and in more than 30 other countries.

The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) is an American nonprofit research and technology organization serving the state of Indiana. The IBRI is the nation's first industry-led collaborative life sciences research institute. Their work focuses on targeting diabetes, metabolic disease, and poor nutrition.

David Lucchino

David L. Lucchino is a life sciences CEO and American entrepreneur known for his work in the biotechnology and medical technology sectors. Currently he is co-founder, president and CEO of Frequency Therapeutics (Nasdaq:FREQ), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing a novel approach to regenerative medicine to create and commercialize therapeutics for degenerative conditions including hearing loss and multiple sclerosis. as well as treatments for other conditions, based on a unique approach to regenerative medicine.

William Rastetter

William H. Rastetter, a scientist, entrepreneur and venture capitalist, is the chair of Neurocrine Biosciences, of Fate Therapeutics, and of Daré Bioscience, Inc. in San Diego, California. He is a founding board member and investor in GRAIL, Inc. in Menlo Park, California, and served for a period as the company’s interim CEO (2017) and chair (2017-2018).. Rastetter is also a director of Regulus Therapeutics. He was a partner in the venture firm Venrock (2006-2013), and a trustee at Caltech (2015-2018). He has served as a director (1998-2016) and as chair of Illumina (2005-2016). He advises SVB Leerink and Illumina Ventures.
