Visalakshi Nityanand is an Indian Carnatic musician, vocalist, and vocal coach known for her work in Carnatic music pedagogy. With over four decades of experience as a performer and teacher, she has been active in the development of contemporary approaches to vocal training within the Carnatic tradition.
Visalakshi Nityanand is the daughter and disciple of Trivandrum Sri R. S. Mani, a senior disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Semmangudi R. Srinivasa Iyer. She also received direct training from Semmangudi R. Srinivasa Iyer. In the later stages of her musical education, she studied under Trivandrum Sri R. Venkatraman and Sangita Kalanidhi T. K. Govinda Rao. This training under several prominent Carnatic musicians shaped her musical approach and contributed to the development of her interpretative style.
Visalakshi Nityanand has performed widely as a Carnatic vocalist and has taught students in India and abroad. She is known for her work as a voice coach and for conducting workshops on Carnatic vocal techniques. Over the course of her career, she has engaged with musicians from various musical traditions, contributing to cross-genre musical dialogue.
From 2018 to 2021, she served as a teacher-performer at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre, Indian High Commission, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Between 2016 and 2018, she was a Guest Lecturer at Kalakshetra Foundation , Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Chennai. She has also served on the Audition Board of All India Radio, Chennai.
Visalakshi Nityanand holds a Master's degree in Indian Music from the University of Madras. She is an ‘A’ Grade artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan , and is an empanelled artiste of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
