Vittorio Torre died 16 January 1921 in Turin (Italy) was an Italian chess player. [1]

He became unofficial Chess Champion of Italy in Turin (VI Torneo Nazionale) in 1895, beating Beniamino Vergani.

Turin is a city and an important business and cultural centre in Northern Italy. During its history, the Shroud of Turin has been subjected to repairs and restoration, such as after the fire which damaged it in 1532. Since 1578 the Shroud has been kept in the Royal Chapel of Turin Cathedral. Currently it is stored under the laminated bulletproof glass of an airtight case, filled with chemically-neutral gasses. The temperature and humidity controlled-case is filled with argon (99.5%) and oxygen (0.5%) to prevent chemical changes. The Shroud itself is kept on an aluminum support sliding on runners and stored flat within the case.

Turin–Lyon high-speed railway High speed rail under construction between Italy and France

The Turin–Lyon high-speed railway is a rail line under construction between the cities of Turin and Lyon. It is intended to link the Italian and French high-speed rail networks and will be 270 km (170 mi) long. The core of the project is the Mont d'Ambin Base Tunnel which will cross the Alps between the Susa Valley in Piedmont and Maurienne in Savoie. At 57.5 kilometres (35.7 mi), that tunnel will be the longest rail tunnel in the world, ahead of the 57.1 km Gotthard Base Tunnel. It represents one third of the estimated overall cost of the project and is the only part of the line where work has started. The estimated cost of the line is €25 billion, of which €8 billion is for the base tunnel.

Tutti-frutti chess is a chess variant invented by Ralph Betza and Philip Cohen in 1978. It has been played regularly in tournaments and correspondence games, such as those of the Italian Association of Chess Variants.
