Germany competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. This was the nation's fourth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics after its reunification in 1990. The German Olympic Sports Confederation sent the nation's second largest delegation to the Games since its reunification. A total of 441 athletes, 250 men and 191 women, competed in 27 sports, and were nominated by DOSB at four occasions.

Selection of the team for the Games in Auckland, New Zealand, was the responsibility of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association. New Zealand's flagbearer at the opening ceremony was swimmer Anthony Mosse, and at the closing ceremony was cyclist Gary Anderson. The New Zealand team finished fourth on the medal table, winning a total of 58 medals, 17 of which were gold.

The 1990–91 Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team represented Michigan State University in the 1990–91 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team played their home games at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan and were members of the Big Ten Conference. They were coached by Jud Heathcote in his 15th year at Michigan State. The Spartans finished the season with a record of 19–11, 11–7 to finish in third place in Big Ten play. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as a No. 5 seed in the Midwest region where they beat Green Bay on a buzzer beater by Steve Smith. In the Second Round, they lost to No. 10 Utah in double overtime, 85–84.
The 1990 Greenlandic Men's Football Championship was the 20th edition of the Greenlandic Men's Football Championship. The final round was held in Nuuk. It was won by Nuuk IL for the fifth time in its history.

The 1990–91 Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball team represented University of Virginia as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference during the 1990–91 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by first-year head coach Jeff Jones. The Cavaliers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as #7 seed in the West region. They were defeated in the opening round by BYU, 61–48. The Cavaliers finished with a record of 21–12.
