Volume Gallery is a commercial art gallery focused on design and contemporary art. It is located in West Town, Chicago. Volume Gallery represents artists and designers working in diverse disciplines such as ceramics, fiber, glass, and object design. The gallery presents seven curated thematic and solo exhibitions a year with an emphasis on emerging and mid-career artists.

Contents

Volume Gallery has participated in fairs such as FOG Design+Art Fair in San Francisco, [1] Felix LA, [2] EXPO Chicago, [3] NADA in New York, [4] Collective in New York, and Design Miami. [5]

Volume Gallery has shown architect-designed objects from architects Norman Kelley, Krueck + Sexton, Pezo Von Ellrichshausen, Ania Jaworska and Stanley Tigerman. [6] The gallery program emphasizes fiber and textile, ceramic, and glass works.

History

It was founded by Claire Warner and Sam Vinz in 2010. [7] They had met while working at Wright auction house. [8]

In 2017 Warner and Vinz were named among the five most important new dealers on the forefront of design in The New York Times Style Magazine. [9] They were featured in Newcity's list of influentials who lead Chicago’s design scene on Design 50: Who Shapes Chicago 2017. [10]

In 2017, Volume Gallery moved from its West Loop location to West Town along with galleries, Document, PLHK, Western Exhibitions, and Rhona Hoffman Gallery. [11] [12] [13]

Volume Gallery represents emerging and mid-career contemporary artists and the design work of architects and contemporary designers.

The Block Museum of Art is a free public art museum located on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The Block Museum was established in 1980 when Chicago art collectors Mary and Leigh B. Block donated funds to Northwestern University for the construction of an art exhibition venue. In recognition of their gift, the university named the changing exhibition space the Mary and Leigh Block Gallery. The original conception of the museum was modeled on the German kunsthalle tradition, with no permanent collection, and a series of changing temporary exhibits. However, the Block Museum soon began to acquire a permanent collection as the university transferred many of its art pieces to the museum. In recognition of its growing collection and its expanding programming, the Gallery became the American Alliance of Museums accredited Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art in 1998. The Block embarked on a major reconstruction project in 1999 and reopened in a new facility in September 2000.

EXPO CHICAGO is an international contemporary and modern art exhibition held each year in Chicago, Illinois. In 2012, it subsumed the role of Art Chicago, which was Chicago's longest-running major contemporary art exposition, running from 1980 until its cancelation after the 2011 fair due to financial problems.

Visual arts of Chicago refers to paintings, prints, illustrations, textile art, sculpture, ceramics and other visual artworks produced in Chicago or by people with a connection to Chicago. Since World War II, Chicago visual art has had a strong individualistic streak, little influenced by outside fashions. "One of the unique characteristics of Chicago," said Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts curator Bob Cozzolino, "is there's always been a very pronounced effort to not be derivative, to not follow the status quo." The Chicago art world has been described as having "a stubborn sense ... of tolerant pluralism." However, Chicago's art scene is "critically neglected." Critic Andrew Patner has said, "Chicago's commitment to figurative painting, dating back to the post-War period, has often put it at odds with New York critics and dealers." It is argued that Chicago art is rarely found in Chicago museums; some of the most remarkable Chicago artworks are found in other cities.

Anne Wilson is a Chicago-based visual artist. Wilson creates sculpture, drawings, Internet projects, photography, performance, and DVD stop motion animations employing table linens, bed sheets, human hair, lace, thread and wire. Her work extends the traditional processes of fiber art to other media. Wilson is a professor in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Tony Tasset is an American artist. His works consists mainly of video, bronze, wax, sculpture, photography, film, and taxidermy. He has had exhibitions in Dallas, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York, Los Angeles, Germany, Canada, Portugal, Italy, Ecuador, and London.

Amanda Williams is a visual artist based in Bridgeport, Chicago. Williams grew up in Chicago's South Side and trained as an architect. Her work investigates color, race, and space while blurring the conventional line between art and architecture. She has taught at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Illinois Institute of Technology, and her alma mater Cornell University. Williams has lectured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New Museum, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and at a TED conference.
