Von Marie Mendez (born September 8, 1950) is a Puerto Rican actress [1] and restaurateur. [2] Alongside such others as Iris Chacon, Millie Aviles, Sully Diaz, Giselle Blondet, Ivonne Goderich, Marilyn Pupo and others, she is remembered as one of the leading actresses during the golden era of telenovelas produced in Puerto Rico, that being between the late 1950s and the early 1990s.

Mendez is a native of the southern city of Ponce.

Acting

Mendez worked as an actress for canal 2, a Telemundo station. Among other well known telenovelas she acted on is 1982's "Fue Sin Querer", 1985's "Tanairi" alongside Juan Ferrara-where she was directed by the famed playwright Dean Zayas-and 1987's "Preciosa", a sequel to "Tanairi" and where she acted alongside Rogelio Guerra.

Restaurateur

In 2007, Mendez opened a restaurant named "Botin" in Ponce. Botin was opened in association with the owners of the "Sobrino de Botín" restaurant in Spain, which is considered the oldest restaurant still operating and was opened in 1725. Several other celebrities attended the opening of her restaurant, including former governor Rafael Hernandez Colon and then current governor Anibal Acevedo Vila as well as fellow actor Braulio Castillo, hijo and Mexican singer and actor Fernando Allende. Personal

Mendez is married to Dr. Vicente Sanchez. She has a son who was born in 1974, chef Luis Freyre, and a daughter who was born in 1980, Von Marie Freyre.

In 2012, her son was accused of fraud. [4] He reached an agreement and paid $2,500 dollars. [5]

Tanairí is the setting for the series, the name of the hacienda where the story takes place. The series theme song "Soledad" was performed by Nydia Caro. One of the directors of Tanairi was the well known playwright, Dean Zayas.

Marilyn Pupo is a Cuban-born Puerto Rican actress, singer and television show host. She is known for her stint as a television show host at Telemundo Puerto Rico's Noche de Gala alongside Eddie Miro, and for starring in the telenovela "El Idolo", also on that channel, alongside Jose Luis Rodriguez, during 1980 and 1981, as well as in other soap operas, such as "Maria Eugenia" and "Ambicion de Poder", where she starred alongside Martin Lantigua.

Dean Zayas Pereira was a Puerto Rican actor, director, playwright, author, poet, dramatic arts professor, and television show host. He directed some of Puerto Rico's best known telenovelas, such as Cristina Bazán, Coralito and Tanairi among others. Zayas was a catedràtic at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus, for over 50 years.

Ivonne del Rosario Goderich Gonzalez, better known as Ivonne Goderich is a Puerto Rican actress, show host and playwright. Goderich is considered, along with Sully Diaz, Von Marie Mendez, Millie Aviles and Giselle Blondet, as one of the five queens of the telenovela genre in Puerto Rico during the 1980s. Of the five, Goderich was the only one who worked for Canal 4 at the time, as the other four worked for Canal 2 instead.
