The event was won by Mike Stulce of the United States, the nation's first victory in the men's shot put since 1968. His countryman Jim Doehring took silver. Vyacheslav Lykho of the Unified Team earned bronze, the first medal for a Soviet or former Soviet athlete in the event since 1980.

The men's middleweight event was part of the boxing programme at the 1972 Summer Olympics. The weight class allowed boxers of up to 75 kilograms to compete. The competition was held from 29 August to 10 September 1972. 22 boxers from 22 nations competed.
