WS Harlan Elementary School is an American elementary school that was honored by the Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 2009. [2]

First known as Lockhart School and established for the mill town's children, the school started in 1903 in a three-room frame building with Mrs. Christine McLeod as the first teacher and an enrollment of 75 students. The building was also used for Sunday school classes. [3]

That building was used until 1924 when a more modern school (the current grammar school building) was constructed of materials from Jackson Lumber Company and named W.S. Harlan Consolidated School in honor of the lumber mill's manager, William Stewart Harlan, who had secured its construction before his death in 1923. [4] The junior high building was also built of Jackson Lumber Company materials and constructed in 1939 as part of the Federal Works Agency's Public Works Administration. [5]

The grammar school building is the oldest schoolhouse in Covington County, Alabama, still functioning as an active school. [6]

The school has served various grade levels through the years, from pre-K to eighth grade, but is currently an elementary school for students pre-K to sixth grade. The designations of the two buildings as "grammar school" and "junior high school" are in recognition of the days in which the school served students K-8. No matter the age of the students, W.S. Harlan School has educated the children of the Lockhart area since it was part of the mill-town community of 1903.

An Alabama Historical Association marker was unveiled at the school on December 11, 2017. [7] On the same occasion the school's auditorium was designated the Joann Welch Geohagan Auditorium in honor of her 48 years of teaching at WSH. [8]

In 2018 the Alabama Bicentennial Commission and Governor Kay Ivey recognized the school as a participating bicentennial school, and WSH became an Alabama Bicentennial PastPort site for Covington County. [9]

Foster Auditorium is a multi-purpose facility at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was built in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project and has been used for Alabama basketball, women's sports, graduations, lectures, concerts, and other large gatherings, including registration. Its status as the largest indoor building on campus came to an end in 1968 with the opening of the Memorial Coliseum. The building housed the Department of Kinesiology until 2006. In April 2009, the University announced a major renovation for the auditorium. After the renovation, the Crimson Tide women's basketball and volleyball programs moved back to Foster Auditorium, their original home.

The Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery is a Roman Catholic congregation of women. whose motherhouse, St. Walburg Monastery, is located at Villa Madonna, in Villa Hills, Kentucky. It was founded in 1859 by three sisters of the Benedictine congregation of Mount St. Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania, who came to Covington to teach the German-speaking children of St. Joseph's parish. They became an independent congregation in 1867. Villa Madonna Academy, a private, Roman Catholic K-12 school is an integral part of the sisters' ministry in Kentucky. Besides operating the Academy, the sisters taught in parish schools and staffed St. John's Orphanage.

P.D. Jackson-Olin High School (J-O) is a four-year public high school in Birmingham, Alabama. It is one of seven high schools in the Birmingham City School System. Founded in 1952 as Western High School, it was renamed Western-Olin High the following year in honor of the F.W. Olin Foundation, a grantor of $600,000 grant for the school's vocational building. It was renamed again in 1973, Western-Olin to P.D. Jackson-Olin High in honor of its founding principal, Dr. Pierre D. Jackson, who retired the same year after 21 years as principal. It was segregated. The school in its current form took shape in 2006 when J-O merged with Ensley High School as part of systemwide school consolidation. School colors are kelly green and gold, and the athletic teams are called the mustangs. J-O competes in AHSAA Class 6A athletics. In 2022 it had 822 students, about 91.5 percent African American, 6.5 percent Hispanic, and .7 percent White. Most students are economically disadvantaged and test scores are a fraction of the state average.

A historical marker for the school was erected by the Florence Historical Board and is located at W College Street at Burrell Street in Florence. It was also known as Burrell Academy, Burrell High School, and Burrell–Slater High School.
