Karate (空手), also karate-do, is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom. It developed from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts under the influence of Chinese martial arts, particularly Fujian White Crane. Karate is now predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes, and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. Historically, and in some modern styles, grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints, and vital-point strikes are also taught. A karate practitioner is called a karate-ka (空手家).
The World Karate Federation (WKF) is the largest international governing body of sport karate with 198 member countries. It is the only karate organization recognised by the International Olympic Committee and has more than hundred million members. The WKF organizes the Junior and Senior Karate World Championships, which are each held every other year. The President of the WKF is Antonio Espinós and the headquarters are located in Madrid, Spain. All the styles are officially recognised by the WKF.
Karate at the 2020 Summer Olympics was an event held in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. It was the debut appearance of karate at the Summer Olympics. Karate was one of four new sports added to the Olympic program specifically for 2020, rather than as a permanent sport.
Karate was first included in the Summer Olympic Games at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, Japan. After it was announced to not be included in 2024, in August 2022 it was announced that karate had made the shortlist for inclusion in the 2028 Games.

Kiyou Shimizu is a Japanese karateka competing in the women's kata event. She won the silver medal in the women's kata event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She is also a two-time gold medalist at the World Karate Championships and a two-time gold medalist at the Asian Games.
Viviana Bottaro is an Italian karateka. She won one of the bronze medals in the women's kata event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Bottaro has also won numerous medals in the women's individual kata and women's team kata events at the World Karate Championships and the European Karate Championships. She is a three-time bronze medalist in the women's individual kata event at the World Karate Championships. She is also the 2014 European champion in this event.
Ryo Kiyuna is an Okinawan karateka. He won the gold medal in the men's kata event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. He is also a four-time gold medalist in the men's kata event at the World Karate Championships and a two-time gold medalist in the men's team kata event, alongside Arata Kinjo and Takuya Uemura. He has also won multiple gold medals in both the individual and team kata events at the Asian Karate Championships.
Merve Çoban is a Turkish karateka. She won the bronze medal in the 61 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She is also a gold medalist and a two-time silver medalist in the women's kumite 61 kg event at the European Karate Championships.
Mattia Busato is an Italian karateka. He is a four-time bronze medalist at the World Karate Championships. He is also the gold medalist in the men's individual kata event at the 2014 European Karate Championships held in Tampere, Finland.
Ahmad Zigi Zaresta Yuda is an Indonesian karateka competing in the men's kata event. He won the gold medal in the men's individual kata event at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in Manila, Philippines. He also won the gold medal in the men's individual kata event at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Luigi Busà is an Italian karateka. He is a two-time gold medalist at the World Karate Championships and a five-time gold medalist at the European Karate Championships. He represented Italy at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, winning the first-ever gold medal in the men's kumite 75 kg event.
Károly Gábor Hárspataki is a Hungarian karateka. He won one of the bronze medals in the men's 75 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. In 2019, he won one of the bronze medals in the men's kumite 75 kg event at the European Games held in Minsk, Belarus.
Hamoon Derafshipour is an Iranian karateka. He qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, where karate will be featured for the first time, as part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Refugee Olympic Team, He started practicing karate when he was 7 years old. Previously, Derafshipour won a bronze medal in the Men's Individual -67 kg Kumite at the 2018 Senior World Karate Championships at Madrid, Spain and Two Asian Karate Championships titles, and several other medals, including three golds and three bronze in the World Karate Federation Karate1 Premier League Championship.
Mohammed Al-Mosawi is a Kuwaiti karateka. He represented Kuwait at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. He competed in the men's kata event. He finished in 5th place in his pool in the elimination round and he did not advance to the next round.
Noah Bitsch is a German karateka. He has won medals at both the World Karate Championships and European Karate Championships with his best individual result being bronze at the 2014 World Karate Championships and silver at the 2015 European Karate Championships. He has also won medals in the men's team kumite event at several editions of both competitions. In 2013, he also won the silver medal in his event at the 2013 World Games held in Cali, Colombia.
Jasmin Jüttner is a German karateka. She is a multiple German champion in the Kata discipline.
