Wais Ahmad Barmak (born 1972) is an Afghan politician who served as the Minister of Interior. [1] [2] Prior to that,he served as Minister for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs of Afghanistan [3] and as Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development.
Barmak was born in 1972 in Kabul,Afghanistan. He had graduated from the Department of Architecture at Kabul University. He then went on to receive an MSc degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London (2004). [4] [5]
In the 1990s,Barmak started working as a field assistant of the ICRC and as a program officer at the Agency Co-ordinating Body for Afghan Relief,and later as a program officer of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). [5]
Barmak was Senior Advisor to the Department of Disaster Management and Preparedness and became a high-level civil servant in the Afghan Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) in 2004.
He was subsequently Senior Advisor on Capacity Development and Programmes,Senior Advisor/Chief Coordinator of the National Rural Access Programme and Executive Director of the National Solidarity Program. From 2008 onward he was Deputy Minister of Programmes at the MRRD. [6]
Barmak is said to be an ally of former vice-president Mohammad Fahim. He was nominated for the position of Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in January 2010,but his nomination was rejected by the Lower House of Parliament and instead Jarullah Mansouri obtained the position. Two years later,then-President Hamid Karzai nominated Barmak for the same position and this time his nomination was approved.
Under his leadership,the National Solidarity Program of the ministry supported 70,000 rural infrastructure projects,such as roads,bridges,retaining walls,protection walls,irrigation schemes,the schools,clinics. [7]
In 2014,after the Karzai administration was replaced by the Ashraf Ghani administration,Barmak began serving President Ghani's Special Representative on Humanitarian Affairs. [8] He became Ghani's advisor in the Northern Zone,tasked to evaluate performance of officials and government agencies and fight corruption. [9]
In October 2015 Barmak became a minister again,when he was appointed to lead the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority,which was being upgraded to ministry. [10]
On 13 August 2017,Barmak was appointed as Afghanistan's Minister of Interior. [11] [12]
Mohammad Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai is an Afghan politician,academic,and economist who served as the fifth president of Afghanistan from September 2014 to August 2021,as the second and final president of the Islamic Republic.

Karim Khalili is an Afghan politician serving as leader of the Hezb-e Wahdat Islami Afghanistan party. Most recently he was Chief of the Afghan High Peace Council from 2017 until its dissolvement in 2019. He was selected as a candidate for Second Vice President of Afghanistan in 2002 by Hamid Karzai;they were elected in 2004 and left office in 2014. Since 1989,he has also been one of the main leaders of the Wahdat political party of Hazara.
Mohammad Haneef Atmar is the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and a former Interior Minister of Afghanistan. He was removed from the Ministry of Interior Affairs by Hamid Karzai in the wake of attacks on the June 2010 Afghan Peace Jirga. Before that he worked with several international humanitarian organisations and served as Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development and Minister of Education. In 2011,he was part of the Right and Justice party. During his time in office,he has visited several countries to get funding to stabilise Afghanistan.
Zalmai Aziz is an Afghan diplomat and is the current ambassador of Afghanistan to the United Nations Office in Geneva and to Switzerland. He is the former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the Russian Federation and the former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan.
Mohammad Yousef Pashtun is an Afghan technocrat and politician. He served as Minister of Urban Development and Housing for two terms and as Governor of Kandahar province in 2003,replacing Gul Agha Sherzai under President Hamid Karzai's administration. In 2010,he was appointed as Senior Adviser to President Karzai on Construction,Mines,Water &Energy. In 2014,minister Pashtun continued to serve as Senior Adviser to President Ashraf Ghani. Yِousef Pashtun is also chairing the Kabul New City Development Authority Board.
Abdullah Abdullah is an Afghan politician who led the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR),which was expected to lead the intra-Afghan peace talks with the Taliban,from 2020 to 2021. He served as Chief Executive of Afghanistan from September 2014 to March 2020 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from December 2001 to April 2005. Prior to that he was a senior member of the Northern Alliance,working as an adviser to Ahmad Shah Massoud. He worked as an ophthalmologist and medical doctor in the 1980s.
Mohammed Masoom Stanekzai is a former chief of National Directorate of Security (NDS). He became the chief of National Directorate of Security (NDS) in 2016. In 2019,he was forced to resign following an extrajudicial killing of Afghan civilians by an NDS unit during a night raid in 2019.
The First Karzai cabinet lead the administration of Afghanistan between 2004,the year Hamid Karzai won the first Afghan presidential election and 2009 when the second presidential election took place. In 2006 there was a major cabinet reshuffle. The first Karzai cabinet followed the Afghan Transitional Administration which was put in place by the 2002 loya jirga. Karzai announced the names of the cabinet on 23 December 2004. The cabinet was sworn in on 24 December 2002 and held its first cabinet meeting on 27 December. This cabinet consisted of 27 ministers,including two women.

Zalmai Rassoul is an Afghan politician who served as Foreign Minister of Afghanistan from January 2010 to October 2013. He previously served as National Security Advisor from June 2002 to January 2010. Through his various roles in Government,Rassoul played a key role in building the Afghan security architecture,uniting the international community in support of an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process,strengthening regional cooperation and security through the establishment of the Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan and the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process,and rebuilding vital industries. He stood as a candidate in the 2014 presidential election.
Ghairat Baheer is a citizen of Afghanistan who currently serves as a Senator in the House of Elders of Afghanistan. He is also the Chairman of the Political Committee of Hezbi Islami in Afghanistan. Ghairat Baheer was held by American forces in extrajudicial detention for over six years. The BBC News reported Pakistani officials took him into custody during a pre-dawn raid on his home in Islamabad on October 30,2002. The BBC said no reason was offered for his apprehension,and that there were rumors US security officials participated in the raid.
The second Karzai cabinet was the cabinet of Afghanistan that led the government from the re-election of president Hamid Karzai in 2009 until the end of his term in 2014. The cabinet consisted of the president,his two vice-presidents,18 ministers who received approval from the Afghan Parliament,and 7 acting ministers who have not been approved.
Salāhuddīn Rabbānī is an Afghan diplomat and politician who was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan from February 2015 to October 2019.
Presidential elections were held in Afghanistan on 5 April 2014,with a second round held on 14 June. Incumbent President Hamid Karzai was not eligible to run due to term limits. The registration period for presidential nominations was open from 16 September 2013 until 6 October 2013. A total of 27 candidates were confirmed to be running for office. However,on 22 October Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission disqualified 16 of the candidates,leaving only 11 in the race. By April 2014 three candidates gave up the race and decided to support some of the eight remaining candidates. Opinion polls showed Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani as the front-runners and indeed the results of the first round of the election had Abdullah in the lead and Ghani behind him. The second set of results came after the run-off on 14 June,two months after the first round. Preliminary results were expected on 2 July and the final result on 22 July. However,widespread accusations of fraud delayed these results. As a result,John Kerry,then United States Secretary of State,mediated the negotiations between the two final candidates,Ghani and Abdullah. After a series of negotiations and talks between Ghani,Abdullah and Kerry,the two candidates agreed to sign an Agreement to form a National Unity Government based on 50–50 power sharing. As a result of that political agreement,a separate position was created for Abdullah as Chief Executive. The National Unity Government's term ran out after the next Afghan presidential election was held in September 2019.

Nasir Ahmad Durrani is an Afghan politician who is also the former Minister of Agriculture,Irrigation &Livestock. He was appointed as the acting minister of Agriculture by the President in September 2017,he assumed the position officially when he received a vote of confidence from the Afghan Parliament in December 2017. Nasir Ahmad Durrani has held various government positions since 2010.
