Wallace Hampton Tucker is an American award-winning playwright,[ citation needed ] and an active environmentalist.
Tucker was born in McAlester, Oklahoma of partial Choctaw descent. He graduated from McAlester High School where he met his future wife, Karen. [1]
Tucker attended the University of Oklahoma and where he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and Master's in physics. He continued his education from there and received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, San Diego in 1966. [2]
He has been active in environmental work, helping to found and lead two nonprofit organizations in Southern California: the Fallbrook Land Conservancy (FLC) and the San Diego Land Conservation Coalition. The FLC was formed in 1988. It has acquired and manages over 1850 acres of open space on 10 preserves throughout San Diego County.[ citation needed ]

Rancho Monserate was a 13,323-acre (53.92 km2) Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County, California given in 1846 by Governor Pío Pico to Ysidro María Alvarado. The grant extended south and east of the present day Fallbrook down to the San Luis Rey River. The grant was bounded on the west by Pico's Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores.
Margarita Peak is a prominent mountain in San Diego County. It is 9 miles (14 km) southwest of Murrieta Hot Springs and 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Fallbrook. Its 3,193-foot (973 m) summit is the 32nd most prominent peak in San Diego County. Margarita Peak is owned by the Fallbrook Land Conservancy, which has closed public access to the peak and the surrounding Margarita Peak Preserve for biological studies and sensitive habitat. The trail to the peak was relatively little-used and not known by many people. It was considered one of San Diego's greatest hidden gems, due to the breathtaking 360-degree panorama views at the top. The main trail began on Margarita Road after the end of Tenaja Road 13 miles (21 km) southwest of I-15 and led to nearby Margarita Lookout. Persons attempting to reach the peak had to use a steep, poorly maintained firebreak that connected to the main trail. The hike to the top was 3 miles (4.8 km) each way.

The May 2014 San Diego County wildfires were a swarm of 20 wildfires that erupted during May 2014, in San Diego County, California, during severe Santa Ana Wind conditions, historic drought conditions, and a heat wave. The main event during mid-May was preceded by a precursor fire that ignited on May 5. The Bernardo Fire has been declared accidental, and officials believe the Cocos Fire was intentionally set. The causes of the other fires are still under investigation by multiple agencies, and a joint task force was formed to coordinate the investigations and facilitate communications. Six injuries and one fire-related fatality were reported.
