Walter McDonald was an Irish Roman Catholic priest, theologian and Professor.

Life and education

McDonald was born in 1854 in Nicholastown, Mooncoin, County Kilkenny. He was educated at St Kieran's College, Kilkenny, and St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1876 for the Diocese of Ossory. [1]

He taught first at St Kieran's College before being appointed Professor of Dogmatic Theology at Maynooth where he taught for over 40 years until his death in 1920. Dr McDonald served as prefect of the Postgraduate students in Dunboyne Establishment in Maynooth, founding the Irish Theological Quarterly in 1909, which ceased publication after his death, but was re-published from 1954 on, and still published today from Maynooth College.

Professional work and reputation

He was known for his opposition to the use of violence in the Irish Nationalist struggle for an independent Ireland and addressed the War of Independence (Ireland) in Some Ethical Questions on War and Peace, with Special References to Ireland in 1919. [2] [3] He maintained a wide circle of friends including the playwright Sean O'Casey and other figures in Irish cultural life. [4]

In the bicentenary history of Maynooth by Patrick Corish one reviewer assesses McDonald's place in that history as merited because he was "the only original theologian Maynooth produced in its first century" who had to "resort to extraordinary means so that his criticisms of seminary education could be published posthumously." [5]

This is a reference to his posthumously published reminiscences in which the independent, outspoken and greatly loved scholar-priest, deplored teaching through Latin and the absence of "free and open competition in all appointments to the staff." [6]

Father Patrick Lavelle (1825–1886) was a priest and Irish nationalist. Lavelle was born in Mullagh, Murrisk, Co. Mayo, the son of Francis Lavelle a farmer. He was educated at the local hedge school and St Jarlath's College, Tuam. In 1844 he went to Maynooth College and was ordained a Catholic priest at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, in 1851, and pursued postgraduate studies there as part of the Dunboyne Establishment. He was appointed in 1854 as a professor of philosophy in the Irish College in Paris against the wishes of rector Rev. Dr. John Miley, Lavelles radical politics would have been at odds with Miley who was supported by Cardinal Cullen, the other bishops supported lavelle. Along with philosophy, he taught the Irish Language at the college. He left Paris in 1858 and returned to Ireland.

Irish Theological Quarterly is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes systematic, moral, and historical theology as well as sacred scripture. It was established by Walter McDonald and Dr. John Harty in 1906, published by M.H. Gill & Son in Dublin, but ceased publication after his death. A new series was started in 1951. SAGE Publications published it on behalf of St Patrick's College, Maynooth.

John Mary Harty served as Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cashel from 1913 until his death in 1946. He served as Patron of the Gaelic Athletic Association from 1928. Patrick Corish was a priest of the Diocese of Ferns, born in Ballycullane parish in County Wexford. He is best known as a distinguished Irish historian and a President of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth. For many years, he was Professor of Ecclesiastical History in Saint Patrick's College Maynooth, in succession to the late Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich.

George Crolly (1813–1878) was an Irish priest and theologian. George Crolly was born in Lough Faughan, Ballyrolly, Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland, on 11 February 1813. He entered Maynooth College in August 1829 to study for the priesthood. A fellow student at the time was his friend and fellow theologian Rev. Dr. Patrick Murray.

Fearghus Ó Fearghail is an Irish priest and academic. Dr. O'Feargail holds an M.Sc.(NUI) from Maynooth, studied biblical theology earning an S.T.L. from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, and studied scripture gaining an L.S.S. and D.S.S. from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1974.

Niall Coll is an Irish Roman Catholic prelate and theologian who has served as Bishop of Ossory since 22 January 2023.
