Warpigs was a Hungarian rock band formed in 1993 [1] .

History

After several member changes, the classic lineup from 1997 consisted of the two Eszenyi brothers, György Újhelyi and Bálint Gátos. They split in 1999 with singer Péter Eszenyi leaving the band. Several singers were drafted to replace him, including Marci Lombos and Chris Alexander, but none of them stayed for long. In 2006 they started playing together again with Eszenyi as singer. Bassist Bálint Gátos has been replaced with Péter Szabó (Igor, HAW) at concerts during the 2010s. They haven't been active in the 2020s.

In the 1990s they played at several high-profile gigs and festivals including Sziget Festival in Budapest and Volt Festival in Sopron, as well as opening for Dog Eat Dog, Bon Jovi, Biohazard and KISS.

The band took their name from the song War Pigs by British heavy metal rockers Black Sabbath from their 1970 album, Paranoid . Faith No More, which influenced the music of Warpigs, also did a cover of this song on their album The Real Thing . The song talks about war and the absurdities of those who make war without regard to the powerless people who are sent to die. It's sometimes called a protest song.

Their first video, Szandál, was directed by Nimród Antal, who later used the same idea for his first major motion picture Kontroll (2003). He and the band members came up with the idea for the video together, however, they are uncredited on Kontroll. [2]

Hungarian Olympic champion water polo player Gergely Kiss is one of their biggest fans. [3]

Gábor Eszenyi has since joined a new band called Jamestown [4] in London where both he and his brother Peter now live. Peter Eszenyi is a visual effects (VFX) supervisor. [5] [6]

Their single Monte Carlo is still regularly played on radio stations. [7]

Their second video for the song Monte Carlo, [14] directed by Márton Nyitrai, won MTV Europe's Best Hungarian Music Video award in 1999.

In 2013, after a successful 20 years anniversary tour, FreshFabrik released a new single, and video Higher & Higher with reunited members: Istvan Horvath and Matyas Koncz.

<i>Kontroll</i> 2003 film

Kontroll is a 2003 Hungarian comedy–thriller film. Shown internationally, mainly in art house theatres, the film is set on a fictionalized version of the Budapest Metro system. "Kontroll" in Hungarian refers to the ticket inspectors checking to ensure a rider has paid their fare. The story revolves around the ticket inspectors, riders, and a possible killer.

The Hungarian Music Awards have been given to artists in the field of Hungarian music since 1992. The award categories are similar to Grammy Awards in the United States and Brit Awards in the United Kingdom.

The Idoru is a post-hardcore band from Budapest, Hungary. It was formed in 2003 by ex-members of the Hungarian hard-core and metalcore band Newborn. The original line-up consisted of Tibor Szalkai (guitars), Gábor Nagy (guitars), Mátyás Mohácsi (bass), Denis Valach (drums) and András Bödecs (vocals). However, three of the original members left the band in 2009.

Amber Smith are a Hungarian pop trio based in Budapest, Hungary formed in 2000 by Imre Poniklo. The band's current line-up is Imre Poniklo, Oleg Zubkov a.k.a. Tooff (bass) and Bence Bátor (drums). Amber Smith were one of the most prominent groups of the Budapest indie music scene in the 2000s.

Miklós Both (born 3 June 1981, Budapest) is a Hungarian composer, performer, folklorist, singer for the band Napra, guitarist, and vitar violin player. He won the Fonogram and Budai awards, and honored with the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit. His folklore film database has recordings from Ukraine, China, Transylvania, Iran, India and others. In 2015, he was chosen by Öröm a Zene! as musician of the year.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Carson Coma</span> Hungarian alternative rock band

Carson Coma is a Hungarian alternative rock band formed in 2018, which won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Hungarian Act in 2022. They released their first album Corduroy Club in April 2019, which included the singles "What A Time To Be Alive" and "Song About My Grandma". Since their first album, on which the majority of songs were in English, they have switched to producing Hungarian-language music. They have subsequently released three further albums, as well as seven non-album singles, and an EP.
