Background

The subreddit r/WatchPeopleDie was banned on March 15, 2019, following the Christchurch mosque shootings, for hosting links to the livestreamed video of the massacre. Following the subreddit's ban,a Telegram channel was created to further continue it. A standalone website was created in 2022 with the same name and focus. The website borrowed many site functions from rDrama, a site dedicated to documenting drama on Reddit (where the owners of rDrama later taking a key role in WatchPeopleDie). [1]

The site requires no e-mail nor age verification to post, and uses an aesthetic that has been described as specifically appealing to younger users according to some sources. However, users are permanently banned if they are found out to be under 18 and the site strictly discourages minors. [2] It also has an alternative, gore-free site called WatchPeopleLive.tv, which consists of areas including educational material, discussion of history, television and gaming.

Marsey the orange cat [3] , a character made by a Ukrainian artist which was first introduced as a Telegram sticker, became the mascot of WatchPeopleDie.

The site receives funding solely through donation or membership with users given perks based on the amount donated. The site features no advertisement.

The site has been variously described as being linked to either far-right extremism or nihilistic violent extremism. Multiple discussion threads on the site are devoted to specific mass shooting or school shooting events and their perpetrators. One particularly popular example being the Columbine shooting. [2] Active users of the site who later committed shootings include Nicholas Prosper, Natalie Rupnow, Solomon Henderson, Dylan Butler, Desmond Holly, and Jesse Van Rootselaar. [4] [1] [5] [2]

However, WatchPeopleDie has consistently banned the perpetrators accounts and those claiming to support them.
