2013 Summer Universiade

The 2013 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXVII Summer Universiade, was held in the city of Kazan, Russia, the most northerly city ever to host a Summer Universiade. Over 10,400 university athletes from 162 countries participated in 13 mandatory and 14 optional sports, making the 2013 Universiade the biggest ever in the history of the event. For the first time in history a Cultural Universiade was also included, with many festivals and shows held simultaneously with the sporting events. The Universiade was organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and by the authorities of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Water polo has been part of the Universiade program since the first games, in 1959. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2009 Summer Universiade. Water polo was not included in 1975 and 1989.

2015 World Aquatics Championships

The 16th FINA World Championships, also Aquatics 2015, were held in Kazan, Russia from 24 July to 9 August 2015. Russia hosted this event for the first time. The number of participating national teams (190), athletes (2,400) and the number of medals (75) were the most ever amongst these championships. This was the first time the World Aquatics Championships partially overlaps with the FINA World Masters Championships that have a number of athletes, countries (110) and medals (635) which are the most ever also.

Basketball was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 7 to July 16 in Kazan, Russia. In total, 40 teams competed in the 2013 Summer Universiade.

Tennis was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 8 to 16 at the Tennis Academy in Kazan, Russia. Men's and women's singles, men's and women's team, and men's, women's, and mixed doubles events was contested.

Volleyball was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 8 to 13 in Kazan, Russia.

Water polo was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 5 to 17 in Kazan, Russia.

Football was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 5 to 16 in Kazan, Russia.

Swimming was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 10 to 17 in Kazan, Russia. The swimming competitions was held at the Akcharlak Swimming Pool and the Aquatics Place, while the open water competitions was held at the Rowing Centre.

Fencing was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 6 to 12 at the Kazan Equestrian Complex Indoor Hall and the Fencing Sport School in Kazan, Russia.

Gymnastics was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 7 to 10 at the Gymnastics Centre in Kazan, Russia. Artistic and rhythmic gymnastics was the two disciplines of gymnastics contested.

Athletics was contested at the 2013 Summer Universiade from July 7 to 12 at the Universiade Village Stadium and the Central Stadium in Kazan, Russia.

Canada competed at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. The team won a total of 16 medals, including 2 gold.

Water polo was contested at the 2017 Summer Universiade from August 18 to 31 in Taipei, Taiwan.

Palace of Water Sports

The Palace of Water Sports is an indoor aquatics centre in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia which was built for the 2013 Summer Universiade. Located on the banks of the Kazanka River, the competitions in synchronized swimming, diving, swimming and water polo took place here. It later hosted the diving events for the 2015 World Aquatics Championships.

Water polo at the 2019 Summer Universiade

The water polo at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples has been played between 2 and 14 July. 20 water polo teams participated in the tournament.
