Mir Wazir Baig is a Pakistani politician from Gilgit-Baltistan who served as the first speaker of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly. He also served as the governor of Gilgit Baltistan in 2010.
Mir Wazir Baig was born in 1942 in Hunza,Pakistan.
He started his political career as the president of the Hunza Students Movement aimed at putting an end to the rule of Mirs. He demanded that people should be allowed to meet President Chaudry Fazal Illahi during his visit to Hunza. Upon this Wazir Baig was brutally tortured and was kept in prison till president completed the visit. Wazir Baig along with his supporters kept raising voice against the cruelties of the Mir rule which came to an end in 1974 when Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto dissolved the state. Wazir Baig started his career by joining Pakistan Peoples Party. He won his seat GBLA-6 and was elected as the 1st speaker of Gilgit Baltistan Assembly. [1] [2] Later on in September 2010,Wazir was appointed the Governor of Gilgit Baltistan. He was elected three times beginning a new era of freedom and prosperity in Hunza.
Hunza,also known as Kanjut,was a princely state in the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan. Initially,it functioned as a principality and subsequently became a princely state under a subsidiary alliance with the British India starting in 1892 and continuing until August 1947. For a brief period of three months,it remained unaligned after gaining independence,and then from November 1947 until 1974,it retained its status as a princely state within Pakistan. The territory of Hunza now constitutes the northernmost part of Gilgit-Baltistan,Pakistan.

Ganish is a village in the Hunza District within the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan. It is the oldest and first settlement on the ancient Silk Road in the Hunza Valley,and is the site of various ancient watchtowers,traditional mosques,religious centers,and a reservoir. It is located 90 km away from Gilgit. The word "Ganish" is unknown but according to the local scholars,it is derived from the Burushaski word "Genish" which means gold. After serving in party positions within the Pakistan People's Party,she was elected to one of the reserved women's seats of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly in 2009 and served as Minister of Information and Tourism. In 2023,she was unanimously elected as deputy speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly,becoming the first woman elected to the post.
