Wells Memorial Institute

Last updated

Wells Memorial Institute was a workingman's club in Boston meant to promote social interaction, mutual help, recreation, and training for working people. It was organized in 1879 by Robert Treat Paine, who was inspired by the English working men's clubs, and named after Rev. E. M. P. Wells of the Episcopal City Mission of Boston. [1]

It offered courses on mechanical drawing, civil service, automobile construction, English, public speaking, cooking, household economics, embroidery, and millinery. [2] It was located at 987 Washington Street. [3]

The Lowell Institute lectures on "mechanics" were given at the Wells in the 19th century. [3]

The Boston accent is a local accent of Eastern New England English, native specifically to the city of Boston and its suburbs. Northeastern New England English is classified as traditionally including New Hampshire, Maine, and all of eastern Massachusetts, though some uniquely local vocabulary appears only around Boston. A 2006 study co-authored by William Labov claims that the accent remains relatively stable, though a 2018 study suggests the accent's traditional features may be retreating, particularly among the city's younger residents, and becoming increasingly confined to the historically Irish American neighborhood of South Boston.
