The West Virginia Daily News is a newspaper in Lewisburg, West Virginia.
The newspaper traces its roots to several weekly newspapers, including The Greenbrier Era (1851-1854), The Greenbrier Independent (1859-1980), The West Virginia News (1897-1967), The White Sulphur Sentinel (1910-1968) and The White Sulphur Springs Star (1962-1980). The current newspaper, The West Virginia Daily News was launched on January 1, 1967 in Ronceverte, WV. The Printing Press and offices were relocated to Lewisburg WV around 1972.
Published Monday through Friday, the newspaper covers local news and events in the Greenbrier Valley, West Virginia, spreading across Greenbrier and Monroe counties, and areas of Pocahontas County. Its partner paper, the West Virginian , is published on Wednesdays. [2]

Henry Mason Mathews was an American military officer, lawyer, and politician in the U.S. State of West Virginia. Mathews served as 7th Attorney General of West Virginia (1873–1877) and 5th Governor of West Virginia (1877–1881), being the first former Confederate elected to the governorship in the state. Born into a Virginia political family, Mathews attended the University of Virginia and afterward practiced law before the outbreak of the American Civil War. When Virginia seceded from the United States, in 1861, he volunteered for the Confederate States Army and served in the western theater as a major of artillery. Following the war, Mathews was elected to the West Virginia Senate, but was denied the seat due to state restrictions on former Confederates. Mathews participated in the 1872 state constitutional convention that overturned these restrictions, and in that same year was elected attorney general of West Virginia. After one term, he was elected governor of West Virginia.

Mason Mathews was an American merchant and politician in the U.S. State of Virginia. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing Greenbrier County from 1859–1865 as a Whig. This period included the secession of Virginia and the resulting American Civil War of 1861–1865. Though Mathews opposed secession, he chose to support the Confederate States of America when Virginia seceded. Throughout the war, much of his efforts were directed toward the Confederate defense of western Virginia. When his home of Greenbrier County was taken into the new State of West Virginia in 1863, he continued to represent Greenbrier County in Virginia's Confederate legislature in Richmond until war's end. He was a member of the Mathews political family.

On June 23, 2016, a flood hit areas of the U.S. state of West Virginia and nearby parts of Virginia, resulting in 23 deaths. The flooding was the result of 8 to 10 inches of rain falling over a period of 12 hours, resulting in a flood that was among the deadliest in West Virginia history. It is also the deadliest flash flood event in the United States since the 2010 Tennessee floods.

Panicked Confederate forces escaped by crossing and burning a bridge across the Greenbrier River.
