Westerdeich is a German television series, based on the Belgian television series Wittekerke , which, in turn, was a remake of the Australian soap opera, E Street .
E Street originally aired from 1989 to 1993 on Network Ten, a commercial TV network in Australia, and was created by Forrest Redlich.
In English, Westerdeich literally means West-dike - but a more accurate translation would probably be Westside - this is also the name of the district in which the original series, E Street, was set.
The serial ran on the TV channel RTL from 29 January 1995, and was always shown weekly on Sunday evenings. There was one season containing 37 episodes.
Westerdeich was the second Australian soap opera to be re-formatted for a European audience by RTL. The first was in 1992; the Grundy Organisation soap opera, The Restless Years (1977–81), was remade as Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten (Good Times, Bad Times), and this series is still running as of December 2019.
Only 3 weeks before Westerdeich launched on RTL, another Australian soap opera remake launched on TV channel, Das Erste on January 3, 1995: Verbotene Liebe was the German version of Sons and Daughters (1982–87), which is another series produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation. Verbotene Liebe ran for ten years until it was cancelled in 2005.

The Restless Years is an Australian soap opera which followed the lives of several Sydney school-leavers and young adults. It was produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation for Network Ten. It debuted December 1977 and ran until late 1981. It was not renewed by the network due to declining ratings. The series had a predominantly young audience.

Reg Grundy Productions was an Australian television production company founded in 1959 by businessman Reg Grundy. It later branched out into Europe and the United States. The company first produced game shows, then branched into soap operas in 1973. In 1995 Reg Grundy sold the company to Pearson Television, which has since become known as Fremantle and is part of the RTL Group. In 2006 FremantleMedia merged Grundy Television and Crackerjack Productions to form Fremantle Australia. Verbotene Liebe was a German television soap opera created by Reg Watson for Das Erste. The show was set primarily in the German city of Düsseldorf although, at times, the city of Cologne and the Spanish island of Mallorca figured prominently in the show's story lines. First broadcast on 2 January 1995, Verbotene Liebe was originally broadcast in 24-minute episodes, five times a week. It expanded to 45-minute episodes on 21 June 2011 and trimmed back to 40-minute episodes on 23 January 2012 to accommodate an adjusted time-slot. In 2006, Pay-TV network Passion began broadcasting episodes of the show from the beginning.
Unter uns is a German television soap opera, first broadcast on RTL on 28 November 1994. It is centered on the lives of the people in a residential house, which is set in the fictional 'Schillerallee' in Cologne. Since the show debuted, the baker's family Weigel is the series core family. Unter uns is not based on a foreign soap opera like Verbotene Liebe or Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten. After Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten, the show was the second daily soap for RTL, followed years later in 2006 by Alles was zählt. The show aired its 5,000th episode on 16 December 2014.

Alles was zählt is a German television soap opera first broadcast on RTL on 4 September 2006. The original plot revolved around Diana Sommer's dream to become a world class ice skater. She fell in love with Julian Herzog, who signed her at the prestigious Steinkamp Sport and Wellness Center, run by the unscrupulous Steinkamp dynasty. Diana and Julian eventually became a couple, but in November 2007, Julian suffered a brain hemorrhage and died during their wedding. Diana remained in Essen until January 2009, when she left to join a skating centre in Halle. The story continues to revolve around the Steinkamp Sport and Wellness Centre and its quest to become a sporting powerhouse, as well as the lives of the characters who work at and around the Centre.
