Western Communications, Inc. was an American newspaper publisher serving the states of Oregon and California from 1953 to 2019. The family-owned [1] company was based in Bend, Oregon and was founded by Robert W. Chandler. [2] Its flagship paper was The Bulletin . [2]

History

Robert W. Chandler bought The Bulletin in 1953 and built his newspaper company up over the ensuing decades, prior to his death in 1996. [3] The company was recognized by an Oregon State University awards program in 1995, for an effective ownership transition from Chandler to his daughter, Elizabeth McCool, and for remaining actively engaged in its community. At the time, the chain consisted of eight papers and employed 300 people. [4] When the company bought The Redmond Spokesman from Mary Brown in 1971, it owned radio stations in Oregon and California. [5]

Western Communications purchased the La Grande Observer in 1959, [6] Baker City Herald in 1967, [7] The Redmond Spokesman in 1971, [5] Burns Times-Herald in 1976, [8] Curry Coastal Pilot in 1981, [9] Del Norte Triplicate in 1988 [10] and The Hermiston Herald in 1992 [11] but would sell it in 2008 to EO Media Group. [12] The Union Democrat was purchased in 1998. [13] The company built a large headquarters building in Bend in 2000. [14] In 2006, the Burns Times-Herald was sold. [15]

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2011, seeking to renegotiate an $18 million loan, and hoping to complete the bankruptcy proceedings within six months. [16] In 2012, the company did emerge from bankruptcy, [14] but also laid off 10% of its staff, due to a sharp decline in advertising revenue from legal notices. [17] In 2017, it listed its headquarters building for sale, but no offer had been accepted as of January 2019, and the company had fallen behind on payments of state taxes. The debt the company owes is estimated at $26 million. [14] In January 2019, the company again filed for bankruptcy protection. [18] Two papers were sold to Country Media, one was sold to RISN Operations and the remaining properties were sold to EO Media Group. [19] [20] [21]

Eagle Newspapers was an American newspaper publisher serving the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The company originated in 1948 when Elmo Smith purchased the Blue Mountain Eagle. He would later sell the paper but the company's name would be derived from that title. Smith served a partial term as Oregon Governor and upon his death the business was managed by his son Denny Smith, who rapidly grew it from three newspapers to nearly twenty in the span of two decades. By 1985, Eagle Newspapers publications accounted for nearly one-half of the weekly newspapers sold each week in Oregon. The company sold off its last paper in 2020.

Robert W. Chandler was an American journalist, businessman, and philanthropist. He was the editor and publisher of The Bulletin, a daily newspaper in Bend, Oregon. He ran the newspaper for 43 years. With the Bulletin as a starting point, he founded Western Communications, Inc., a company that owns and publishes newspapers in Oregon and California. Among his various efforts in the field, he served as president of the national Society of Professional Journalists. He was also a major donor to the High Desert Museum in Bend. He was inducted into the Oregon Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2006.

The 1240 frequency was put up for auction after KPRB's license was surrendered and returned to the air as KRDM in 2004.

The 2021 St. Charles Bend strike was a labor strike involving technical workers at the St. Charles Medical Center – Bend in Bend, Oregon, United States. The strike was precipitated when, in 2019, the workers at the hospital unionized with the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals. Following this, the union's bargaining unit began to negotiate a labor contract between the workers and the hospital, with several dozen negotiating meetings following over the next year. By December 2020, however, both sides were at an impasse, and in February 2021, the union filed a strike notice. Despite legal challenges by the hospital, the strike commenced on March 4. On March 13, both sides agreed to a proposal by a federal mediator, with workers to return to work while both sides continued to negotiate a contract, with a deadline of March 31. The strike officially ended on March 15 and workers returned to the hospital. A contract was eventually ratified between the union and hospital by the end of that month.
