Westside Neighborhood School is a private independent school in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1980, the school operates preschool, elementary school, and middle school grades (PS-8). [1] Head of school, Brad Zacuto, has been at the helm of WNS since 2008.
Rooted in a joyful, child-centered approach, WNS empowers students to grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. Our students are curious thinkers, bold creators, and compassionate leaders who take ownership of their learning and their impact. Through a rich, project-based curriculum and a commitment to active learning, we nurture innovation, resilience, and a growth mindset. At WNS, every child is encouraged to take risks, embrace mistakes, and celebrate the unique strengths they and others bring to the community.
The WNS program stands firmly on four essential pillars: Academic Excellence; Character; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice; and Community.
Through the school year ending in 2005, WNS was Westchester Neighborhood School, located in south Westchester directly under the final approaches of aircraft landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), hence the "Jets" nickname used by the school's athletic teams. In September 2005 classes resumed in a vastly improved 50,000-square-foot (4,600 m2) facility in Playa Vista. WNS added a second building to its campus in 2010 featuring additional space for performing arts, Spanish, and choral music. The school's third campus building will provide 26,000 additional square feet will instructional space for the preschool, a full-sized gymnasium, and middle school STEAM Academic Complex.
In 2025, the school announced that they would be moving the DK-8 program down the road to a state-of-the-art new campus building, measuring over 130,000 sq ft, and sitting on 5 acres of land. The preschool will remain in the current building (12901 Coral Tree Place), and will allow for children as young as 2 to enroll at the preschool, and the addition of a Toddler Program for infants age 12-24 months, launching in January 2027. The new campus will open for the 2026-27 school year, and will secure the future of WNS for generations to come.
