When Lightning Flashes Over the Sea is a 2025 documentary film written and directed by Eva Neymann. The film portrays people in Odesa who are searching for dignity and dreams between war, loss and hope. [1] [2]
The film was selected in Forum at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where it had first screening on 15 February 2025. [3]
Odessa, how are you? The camera person roams your streets with her camera, capturing moments of life during wartime.
In the documentary the lens gathers glimpses of resilience and dreams, defying the narrative of mere victimhood. A widow tends to the city’s stray cats, a well-read drifter flirts with me, an old friend passes away, and yet again, the power goes out. Generators carve out small pockets of light, a wandering monk appears, giving his meal to another beggar, and a young man faces the threat of conscription, as does his brother—though he is in Moscow. In the end, as a great summer storm rolls through, everyone prays: let it be just thunder and lightning! Odessa, may you know nothing more than thunder and lightning!
Principal photography began on 23 October 2023 at location in Ukraine. Filming ended on 15 April 2024 in locations in Odesa, Ukraine. [4]
When Lightning Flashes Over the Sea had its world premiere in the Forum section of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival 15 February 2025. [5] [6]
