The Whitehead Memorial Museum is a western museum located at located at 1308 South Main Street, [1] in Del Rio, Texas. It boasts a replica of "The Jersey Lilly" saloon, and the gravesites of Judge Roy Bean and his son Sam, [2] [3] the latter of whom "was killed there in a street fight". [2] The two-and-a-half acre property was donated to the city and county for by the Del Rio ranching family in 1962. [4]

Phantly Roy Bean Jr. was an American saloon-keeper and Justice of the Peace in Val Verde County, Texas, who called himself "The Only Law West of the Pecos". According to legend, he held court in his saloon along the Rio Grande on a desolate stretch of the Chihuahuan Desert of southwest Texas. After his death, fictional Western films and books cast him as a hanging judge, although he is known to have sentenced only two men to hang, one of whom escaped.

The Republic of the Rio Grande was one of a series of independence movements in Mexico against the unitary government dominated by Antonio López de Santa Anna, including the Republic of Texas, and the second Republic of Yucatán. Insurgents fighting against the Centralist Republic of Mexico sought to establish the Republic of the Rio Grande as an independent nation in northern Mexico.
