Widdershins is a free webcomic drawn by Kate Ashwin. [1] It has ten complete stories, and is presently updating the eleventh and final story.
Widdershins is set in the eponymous fictional magical city of Widdershins in West Yorkshire, England, during the mid 1830s. While technology develops apace, it does so with the benefit (and hazards) of magic. [1] [2]
The story begins with (former) student wizard and stage magician Sidney Malik, who is cursed with stealing small objects, becoming attached to a bracelet that by custom declares him the King of Thieves. This brings him to the notice of Harriet "Harry" Barber, professional bounty hunter and pipe smoker, and leads them two off onto further adventure [1]
In the second story, two vagrants are pressed to work for the city's bureaucracy to deal with "malforms," the destructive results of summoning spells gone awry. Their comical attempts to deal with the malforms are connected to the agenda of their employer, a local politician who is seeking to put greater restrictions on magic. [1] Other storylines include an ex-soldier making a deal with a spirit of Envy, and a supernatural tale of cake-making. [2]
Ashwin said in an interview in 2015 that she started work on Widdershins around 2011, saying that "there weren't quite enough fun, light-hearted adventure comics out there," and writes each book to be a complete story "since I like resolution". [2]
Widdershins, Volume 7- Curtain Call, won the British Fantasy Award for Best Comic/Graphic Novel in 2019. [3]
In a review for io9, Lauren Davis said that "Ashwin strikes a comedic tone with her comic that might be too light for some, but her worldbuilding is growing steadily more intriguing and her characters are fun to spend time with". [1] Steve Morris, reviewing Widdershins for ComicsAlliance, described it as "a uniquely English sort of series, inspired as much by the Great British Bake Off as by classic novels gone by." [2]
Kate Ashwin lives in West Yorkshire and is married. [4] Her first comic was Darken, a D&D-based comic with a main cast of antiheroes. [5] In addition to Widdershins, which she works full time on, [2] Kate Ashwin has also contributed comics to printed collections of fairy tales [6] [7] and to Chemistry World. [4] She has also written a story for Dark Horse Presents, and contributed artwork to a weekly comic for kids called The Phoenix. [4]

E. M. Carroll, previously credited as Emily Carroll, is a comics author from Ontario, Canada. Carroll started making comics in 2010, and their horror webcomic His Face All Red went viral around Halloween of 2010. Since then, Carroll has published two books of their own work, created comics for various comics anthologies, and provided illustrations for other works. Carroll has won several awards, including an Ignatz and two Eisners.
Cucumber Quest is an adventure webcomic written and illustrated by Gigi D.G. since April 3, 2011. The comic features the character Cucumber and his sister Almond traveling across a fictional world in order to defeat the Nightmare Knight, meeting various friends and foes on the way. The child-friendly comic has multiple volumes in print thanks to crowdfunding.
Ava's Demon is a science fantasy webcomic written and drawn by Michelle Czajkowski Fus and colored by a number of colorists. The comic, which has been ongoing since 2012, is known for its painted art style and animations. The first physical publication of Ava's Demon was released in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter project, and another Kickstarter in 2020 became the most-backed webcomic Kickstarter at the time.
Stand Still, Stay Silent is a Finnish-Swedish webcomic started by Minna Sundberg, which ran 2013–2022. Set in post-apocalyptic Scandinavia, the webcomic incorporates Norse mythology, focusing on an adventure into the external "silent world".
