Wildwood is a small unincorporated community [1] centered on the Wildwood Road, [2] just west of the Morehead City town limits, along US Highway 70, in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. Newport is the next closest town.

Community

The larger region encompassed by the Wildwood fire district is also sometimes referred to as "Wildwood" by local residents, and contains about 5000 residents. [3] The Wildood Fire Department merged with the Morehead City Fire & EMS on October 1, 2014. [3] The Wildwood Presbyterian Church, located on the Wildwood Road, [4] has been in existence since the 1890s. The Wildwood Community Cemetery contains graves dating to American Civil War times, and is accessible via Old Murdoch Road. [5] Wildwood was the home of Jake Wade, [6] baseball pitcher in the 1930s and 1940s. He died on February 1, 2006, at his home in Wildwood at the age of 93. [6]

Local government

Wildwood is located in District 3 for the Carteret County Board of Commissioners. As of March 2015, Wildwood was represented on the Board by Terry Frank, whose term was due to expire in November 2016. [7] District 3 also includes part of Morehead City as well as Broad Creek.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bogue Banks</span>

Bogue Banks form a 21-mile (34 km) barrier island off the mainland of North Carolina in Carteret County. The island, separated from the mainland by Bogue Sound, runs east to west, with the ocean beaches facing due south. Bogue Banks is the only island on the Carteret County shore that has been developed with housing: numerous communities are located on the island and can be accessed by one of two bridges across Bogue Sound, either from Morehead City to Atlantic Beach, which is the more heavily traveled bridge, or from Cape Carteret to Emerald Isle. The communities of Bogue Banks are the most prominent of the Crystal Coast. NC 58 traverses a majority of the island's length. There are several hotels that dot the island, but most of the land contains private houses, some of which are rented out during the summer, or maritime forest. Stores and other commercial properties are limited to the five main communities.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bogue Sound</span>

Bogue Sound is a lagoon in the state of North Carolina separating the Bogue Banks, a 21-mile-long (34 km) barrier island, from the mainland. The sound is part of North Carolina's "Crystal Coast", a tourism marketing term that is also used interchangeably with the term "Southern Outer Banks." It is the southwestern-most sound among the interconnected series of sounds along the Outer Banks that starts in the northeast at Currituck Sound.

West Carteret High School is a public secondary school located in Morehead City, North Carolina on Country Club Road, and is part of the Carteret County Public Schools system. The school serves the student populations of Morehead City, Newport, Atlantic Beach, and surrounding areas. It opened in 1964, and has since grown to be the largest high school in Carteret County. Its school mascot is Pete the Patriot.
