Wilfred B. Taylor was a company director who served as chairman of Newcastle United F.C. from 1953 to 1957.

Career

Taylor was a specialist in seeking new talent for the club. In 1943, he attended a match between the Air Training Corps team of Northumberland and Yorkshire at Redheugh Park. Impressed at what he saw, he invited a 19-year-old Jackie Milburn, and some of his teammates, back to St James' Park: Newcastle's manager, Stan Seymour, had Milburn signed as player within a few days. [1] Taylor went on the negotiate the transfer of Len Shackleton to Newcastle for a £13,000 fee in 1946. [2]

Taylor became chairman of Newcastle United F.C. in 1953 but stood down after four years in summer 1957. [3] He remained on the board of the club and reverted to his old role of seeking new talent: he secured the transfer to Newcastle of Stan Anderson for £35,000 in November 1963, [4] the transfer of Kit Napier to Newcastle for £18,000 in November 1965 [5] and also persuaded the Danish player, Preben Arentoft, to sign a contract with Newcastle in March 1969. [6]

In 1963, Taylor was one of the directors who received a writ from the Newcastle player, George Eastham, on the basis that, as was typical of the retain and transfer system operating at the time, the club was refusing to allow him to transfer and this was an unfair restraint of trade. [7] The resulting court case, at which Taylor was the lead witness for the company, [8] led to reform of the transfer market. [9]

Taylor became a member of the Football League Management Committee in 1964; [10] he went to be a vice-president of the English Football League and served in that role until 1970. [11]

George Stanley Seymour was a footballer who played for Newcastle United then became manager, vice-chairman and director of the club. Born in Kelloe, Seymour is one of the club's all-time greats, and was known as 'Mr. Newcastle United' after the various years and roles he delivered for the club. As a player, despite his small physique, he was famous for his runs from the left wing.

George Scott Martin was a Scottish football player and manager whose position was inside forward. He played over 200 times for Hull City, won an English Football League winner's medal with Everton in 1928, and served Luton Town as a player and manager.

Thomas Jackson Walker was an English centre-half who also played as an outside-right. Christopher Robin Anthony Napier was a Scottish professional footballer who scored 119 goals from 379 appearances in the Football League playing as a forward for Blackpool, Preston North End, Workington, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Blackburn Rovers.

During the 1987–88 season, Newcastle United participated in the Football League First Division. Following the sale of star player Peter Beardsley to Liverpool for a club record fee of £1.9 million, manager Willie McFaul recruited Brazilian international Mirandinha to replace Beardsley. With the Brazilian joining Goddard and Paul Gascoigne, the team managed a mediocre start to the season. Midfielder Glyn Hodges arrived from Wimbledon but only managed seven games in his 86-day stay, before heading back south. McFaul signed young Irishman Michael O'Neill in the winter; hailed as a new George Best by some, the 18 year old went on an amazing run of 12 goals in 19 games that saw Newcastle finish 8th, their highest finish since being promoted back to the top flight.
