The West Kentucky Coal Field,alternatively The North Pennyrile or simply Northwest Kentucky,comprises an area in the west-central and northwestern part of the state,bounded by the Dripping Springs Escarpment and the Pennyroyal Plateau and the Ohio River,but is part of the Illinois Basin that extends into Indiana and Illinois. It is characterized by Pennsylvanian age sandstones,shales and coal. In a recent effort to distinguish itself from its coal mining past,which in the last 10 years has all but completely disappeared by 2024 with only a scant few mines still operating,the area now usually refers to itself as the Green River Valley since around 2002,named for the Green River,a southern tributary that flows through every county in the region except Union and Hancock. Most regional businesses and many government services use either Green River Valley or simply Green River in their name. Nearly,all of the counties in the area are part of the television market known as the Kentucky–Illinois–Indiana tri-state area.
Tayshaun Durell Prince is an American professional basketball executive and former player. The 6-foot-9-inch (2.06 m) small forward graduated from Dominguez High School before playing college basketball for the University of Kentucky. He was drafted 23rd overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2002 NBA draft and went on to win a championship with the team in 2004.

William English "Brit" Kirwan is an American university administrator and mathematician who is chancellor emeritus of the University System of Maryland (USM) and professor emeritus of mathematics at the University of Maryland,College Park. Most recently,Kirwan served as chancellor of USM from 2002 to 2015. The 2008 United States Senate election in Kentucky was held on November 4,2008. Minority Leader and incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell won re-election to a fifth term. Although Barack Obama lost Kentucky by a 16.22% margin to John McCain in the concurrent presidential election,McConnell more narrowly kept his seat with a 5.94% margin against businessman Bruce Lunsford. This was a greatly reduced margin from when he won re-election in 2002 with a 29.4% margin.

Old Friends is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) equine retirement facility in Georgetown,Kentucky,accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). The organization started with one leased paddock and two horses,but it now owns 136 acres,Dreamchase Farm,with additional leased pasturage. It is the only Thoroughbred retirement facility in the United States that accepts stallions on a regular basis. Old Friends is currently home to over 150 retired Thoroughbred athletes.
In the United States,the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing,commonly known as the Triple Crown,is a series of horse races for three-year-old Thoroughbreds,consisting of the Kentucky Derby,Preakness Stakes,and Belmont Stakes. The three races were inaugurated in different years,the last being the Kentucky Derby in 1875. The Triple Crown Trophy,commissioned in 1950 but awarded to all previous winners as well as those after 1950,is awarded to a horse who wins all three races and is thereafter designated as a Triple Crown winner. The races are traditionally run in May and early June of each year,although global events have resulted in schedule adjustments,such as in 1945 and 2020.

Thomas Harold Massie is an American politician. A member of the Republican Party,Massie has been the United States representative for Kentucky's 4th congressional district since 2012. The 1992 United States Senate election in Kentucky took place on November 3,1992. It was concurrent with elections to the United States House of Representatives. Incumbent Senator Wendell Ford won reelection to a fourth and final term. As of 2023,this was the last time Democrats won a U.S. Senate election in Kentucky.
