William Howard Rawson (January 27, 1892 – August 26, 1957) was an American Republican Party politician from New Jersey who served six terms on the Essex County Board of Freeholders.

The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP, is one of the two major political parties in the United States; the other is its historic rival, the Democratic Party.

New Jersey is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. It is located on a peninsula, bordered on the north and east by the state of New York, particularly along the extent of the length of New York City on its western edge; on the east, southeast, and south by the Atlantic Ocean; on the west by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; and on the southwest by the Delaware Bay and Delaware. New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state by area but the 11th-most populous, with 9 million residents as of 2017, and the most densely populated of the 50 U.S. states; its biggest city is Newark. New Jersey lies completely within the combined statistical areas of New York City and Philadelphia. New Jersey was the second-wealthiest U.S. state by median household income as of 2017.

Biography

He was born on January 27, 1892. He was a graduate of Stevens Preparatory School and New York University Law School.

He served as a Judge of the Recorder's Court in Bloomfield, New Jersey from 1919 to 1931. He served as the Supervisor of Bills for the New Jersey General Assembly. In 1930, he was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for Essex County Register of Deeds and Mortgages.^[1] He was elected Essex County Freeholder in 1932, and was re-elected in 1935, 1938, 1941, 1944 and 1947.

Bloomfield is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 47,315, reflecting a decline of 368 (-0.8%) from the 47,683 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,622 (+5.8%) from the 45,061 counted in the 1990 Census. It surrounds the Bloomfield Green Historic District.

The New Jersey General Assembly is the lower house of the New Jersey Legislature.

The Essex County Register of Deeds and Mortgages is an elected, statutory officer in Essex County, New Jersey, USA who is responsible under the law for recording, filing, and preserving all property transactions within the 22 municipalities of the County. The term of office is five years. Essex County is one of the two counties in New Jersey to have this office; in the other 19 counties, the Office of County Clerk is responsible for recording.

He was elected Freeholder Director in 1934.^[2] and again in 1941.^[3] He gave up his Freeholder seat in 1950 to run for the U.S. House of Representatives against freshman Congressman Peter W. Rodino.^[4] Rodino won by 21,819 votes, 60,432 (61.02%) to 38,613 (38.99%).^[5]

Peter Wallace Rodino Jr. was a Democratic United States congressman from New Jersey from 1949 to 1989. Rodino rose to prominence as the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, where he oversaw the impeachment process against Richard Nixon that eventually led to the president's resignation. He was the longest-serving member ever of the United States House of Representatives from the state of New Jersey.

He died on August 26, 1957.
