Port Vale Football Club are a professional football club based in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England, which compete in EFL League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system. Vale are named after the valley of ports on the Trent and Mersey Canal. They have never played top-flight football, and hold the record for the most seasons in the English Football League (112) without reaching the first tier. After playing at the Athletic Ground in Cobridge and The Old Recreation Ground in Hanley, the club returned to Burslem when Vale Park was opened in 1950. Outside the ground is a statue of Roy Sproson, who played 842 competitive games for the club. The club's traditional rivals are Stoke City, and games between the two are known as the Potteries derby.
Frank Stokes was an English professional footballer who played as a full back. He made more than 250 appearances in the Football League playing for Burslem Port Vale and Small Heath / Birmingham between 1898 and 1910. In between these two spells, he spent 1901 to 1903 at Reading and helped the club to finish second in the Southern League in the 1902–03 season. He played in several England trials but was never selected.
William Edwin Beats was an England international footballer. A centre-forward, he scored 150 goals in 403 league games in a 16-year career from 1891 to 1907.

Adrian Capes, was an English footballer. A forward, he scored a total of 135 goals in 340 league and FA Cup games in a 17-year career with Nottingham Forest, Burton Wanderers, Burton Swifts, Burslem Port Vale, and Stoke. He also played cricket for Staffordshire in the 1900 Minor Counties Cricket Championship. After retiring in 1911, he worked behind the scenes at Port Vale from 1911 to 1934. His brother, Arthur, was also a professional footballer.

George Samuel Eccles was an English footballer who played at right-back in the Football League and Southern League for Burslem Port Vale, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton, Preston North End, West Ham United and Bolton Wanderers. He helped Bolton Wanderers to win promotion out of the Second Division in 1904–05.
Samuel Bolton Ashworth was an English footballer who played as a defender in the Football League for Burslem Port Vale, Everton, Manchester City and Stoke. He played for Manchester City in their victory in the 1904 FA Cup final, and also helped both City and Everton to finish second in the First Division.
The 1898–99 season was Burslem Port Vale's fifth season of football in the English Football League; it followed a two-season absence, which the club spent in the Midland Football League. A solid return to the Football League, they finished in mid-table. They had the strongest defence in the division as they conceded fewer goals than any other team. Instead, a lack of firepower in front of the goal prevented a push for promotion.
The 1900–01 season was Burslem Port Vale's third consecutive season of football in the English Football League. Finishing in ninth place for the second time in three years, the club would have to wait over two decades before they would better such a finish. Vale was a typical mid-table team in 1900–01, with their home form slightly disappointing compared to teams around them. The team was settled, however, once again poor attendances were an issue.
The 1901–02 season was Burslem Port Vale's fourth consecutive season of football in the English Football League. The season was an unremarkable mid-table affair, however, was a positive step for the club as they managed to turn a profit without selling any major players.
The 1906–07 season was Burslem Port Vale's ninth consecutive season of football in the English Football League. The club resigned from the league on 14 June 1907.
The 1992–93 season was Port Vale's 81st season of football in the English Football League, and fourth-successive season in the Second Division. John Rudge found new stars by bringing both Ian Taylor and Paul Musselwhite to the club at a combined fee of just £40,000. His team won the pre-season TNT Tournament and also won the Football League Trophy. In the league, Vale reached third place, four points off their rivals Stoke City, who lifted the title. They reached the play-off final, but lost out 3–0 to West Bromwich Albion. They left the FA Cup and the League Cup at the Third Round and First Round stages respectively. They played five Potteries derby games, winning the Football League Trophy clash and the FA Cup clash after a replay, but losing both encounters in the league.
The 1993–94 season was Port Vale's 82nd season of football in the English Football League and fifth-successive season in the Second Division. They won promotion to the First Division as the division's runners-up, just one point away from champions Reading. In the FA Cup, John Rudge's men caused an upset by defeating top-flight Southampton, before they exited in the Fourth Round. Vale were knocked out of the League Cup in the First Round and the Football League Trophy in the Area Quarter-finals.
John Kay Horne, or Johnny Horne, was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Accrington, Windsor, Grimsby Town, Bury, Burslem Port Vale, Blackburn Rovers, Notts County, Burton Swifts, and Darwen. He kept goal for Blackburn as they won the 1890 FA Cup final.
