William Young (died 23 April 1662) was an English viol player and composer of the Baroque era, who worked at the court of Ferdinand Charles, Archduke of Austria in Innsbruck. The sonatas which he published in 1653 were some of the earliest sonatas produced by an English composer.

Biography

The details of Young's origins are unknown. By 1652 he was a chamber musician at the Innsbruck court, where "the Englishman", as he was called, was a highly regarded viol player and composer. [1] The design of his English-made viol influenced that of some of the viols built by Jakob Stainer, the Austrian luthier. [2] In 1660 Ferdinand Charles granted permission for Young to visit England, but there are no traces of his reappearance there. [3] He is not to be confused with William Young (died 1671), another musician, who played violin and flute at the court of Charles II of England from 1661. [4]

Young died on 23 April 1662 and was buried at Innsbruck's parish church, St Jakob, [5] which has since become Innsbruck Cathedral. [6]

Works

Young and Henry Butler, an English viol player working at the Spanish court, were the first English composers to call their works sonatas. [7] However, Butler died in 1652 with his three sonatas unpublished. [8] Young's 11 sonatas for two, three, and four parts and continuo, published in Innsbruck in 1653, [9] are known to have reached England. [10] In modern times, the 11 sonatas were rediscovered by William Gillies Whittaker. He found them in manuscript in Uppsala University Library in Sweden, and published them in 1930. [11]

Carl Friedrich Abel was a German composer of the pre-Classical era. He was a renowned player of the viola da gamba, and produced significant compositions for that instrument. He was director of music at the Dresden court from 1743, and moved to London in 1759, becoming chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte in 1764. He founded a subscription concert series there with Johann Christian Bach. According to the Catalogue of Works of Carl Friedrich Abel (AbelWV), he left 420 compositions, with a focus on chamber music.

The viola da gamba, or informally gamba, is any one of a family of bowed, fretted, and stringed instruments with hollow wooden bodies and pegboxes where the tension on the strings can be increased or decreased to adjust the pitch of each of the strings. Although treble, tenor and bass were most commonly used, viols came in different sizes, including pardessus, treble, alto, small tenor, tenor, bass and contrabass. Separating these from other bowed string instruments such as the viola da braccio was the instruments' orientation; members of the older viol family were played with the neck oriented upwards, the rounded bottom downwards to settle on the lap or between the knees.

Gottfried Finger, also Godfrey Finger, was a Moravian Baroque composer. He was also a virtuoso on the viol, and many of his compositions were for the instrument. He also wrote operas. Finger was born in Olomouc, modern-day Czech Republic, and worked for the court of James II of England before becoming a freelance composer. The fact that Finger owned a copy of the musical score of the work Chelys by the Flemish composer Carolus Hacquart suggests that the two composers may have worked together in England.

Laurence Dreyfus, FBA is an American musicologist and player of the viola da gamba who was University Lecturer and Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford.

Carolus Hacquart was a Flemish composer and musician. He became one of the most important 17th-century composers in the Dutch Republic and possibly also worked in England.

Adam Drese was a German composer, kapellmeister, and bass viol player of the baroque period.

Judith Davidoff was an American viol player, cellist, and performer on the medieval bowed instruments. She was considered the “Grande Dame of the viol”, "a master of the viola da gamba and other stringed instruments" and "a central part of the early-music scene." Her recorded performances reflect her wide range of repertoire and styles, including such works as Schoenberg's Verklaerte Nacht and 13th-century monody. She is responsible for the catalog of 20th- and 21st-century viol music.

Henry Harris was an English stage actor and theatre manager. Initially a painter he was a founder member of the new Duke's Company in 1660 following the Restoration which established itself at the old Salisbury Court Theatre before moving to the new Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre shortly afterwards. Due to his background Harris may have been a set designer and painter during his early years with the company. However, by 1661 he was acting, and his first recorded role was in William Davenant's The Siege of Rhodes that summer. He quickly established himself as the second actor in the troupe after Thomas Betterton.

Edward Angel was an English stage actor of the early Restoration Era. Along with James Nokes and Cave Underhill he was one of the leading comedians of the period. It is possible he began his career as a boy actor during the pre-English Civil War era, but he was an experienced actor by the time he was a member of John Rhodes's troupe in 1660. From 1662 he acted with the Duke's Company, initially at Lincoln's Inn Fields and after 1671 at the new Dorset Garden Theatre.

Elizabeth Heard was an English stage actress. She was born in London the daughter of William Heard, a physician and playwright, and his wife Ann Heard, an actress. Elizabeth made her stage debut at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane as a child actor in 1782, where he mother was employed. She often played young male roles such as the Duke of York in Richard III and Prince Arthur in King John. As well as appearing as a member of the company at Drury Lane, she also began summer stints at the Haymarket from 1789 gradually playing more mature and important roles. In 1801 she left the Drury Lane company and later acted in Newcastle.
