Wilson Grove is located in Sonoma County, California, United States. [1] It contains rock formations and a grove of redwood trees. [2] [3] Wilson Grove is located near California's Russian River, west of Windsor, California; since the 1920s, Wilson Grove (named after Walter Wilson) has been used for camps and outings. [3] [4]
By 1922, mollusc fossils had been discovered and analyzed in Wilson Grove, which up to the 1970s was considered as part of the Merced Formation. [5] [6] [7] Scientific studies of the rock formations at Wilson Grove began by 1952, and eventually by 1988 provided evidence that around 4 million years ago, there was a shallow sea covering Sonoma County, which was named as the Wilson Grove Sea, distinct from the Merced Sea covering San Francisco during that time. [8] [9] In 1983, the rock formations at Wilson Grove were named as the Wilson Grove Formations, which extends to the wider Sonoma County and enters a part of Marin County, California. [7]
